You know this will be challenged and the challenger will win don't you?

It's not like this is the first town to do so. The town in Georgia, Kenesaw?, passed a similar law a good number of years ago, and it's still in force AFAI.Who's going to challenge the law, some out of stater brought in by the ACLU? They wouldn't have standing to challenge it. On what basis would it be unconstitutional? What provision of the Constitution would it violate? The federal government could pass such a law tomorrow, and it would be constitutional as well. In fact, one of the first laws passed by the first Congress did something similar, although the requirement was only on males (try that today!) It also specified that the arms be of the type used by the army! (hmm, wonder if that one was ever formally repealed? ah well it was too specific, so it would require us to own a musket, of a particular calibre, or a rifle, depending on where we lived. If we had a horse, we'd have to have a brace of pistols and a saber...maybe the people in places that ban pistols should go out and buy a horse? :) )

This KS law doesn't require anyone morally scrupulous of being armed to keep arms. So what is your problem? Better they should tax everybody, and use the money to buy a nice shiney police car and hire Barney to drive it? Oh and of course buy Barney a gun a bullet or two?

I have aconstitutional right to own a gun but I damn sure don't want a government body making a law that I MUST own a gun.

Not exactly, you don't have a constitutional right, the Bill of Rights, forbids the Government from infringing on your God given right to own guns. I agree, it is not up to any government entity to mandate what I own.

No wild injuns around here any more and no laws in Illinois that I know of that require anyone to own a gun.

No wild injuns, maybe depending on your defintion of "wild' I guess. Today there's lots worse. Indian boys were raised with strong male authority figures, usually their father, uncles, grandfathers and so forth. They weren't nearly as wild as many kids in the ghetto and barrio, and even some in the suburbs, are today.

Mayor: Jeb, I herd you got robbed the other night.

Jeb: Yeah, the bastard broke my winder, and crawled in and took my VCR and my pitcher of Clinton over the fireplace.

Mayor: Did you wing him?

Jeb: Wing em, I don't have a gun!

Mayor: That'll be $10!

This is not the first one and the other cases won. The key is that the laws like this contain a conscience clause. Anyone whose conscience objects can register their objection with the city hall. (of course this puts all thieves on notice of which house is safe.)

The other point to this law is the PR factor. Whether or not actually enforced, It is now the county which required a gun in every house. A thief will just move on to an unarmed county.

All the more reason to enforce this law in all the counties.

Well, this says I do have a right and it shall not be infringed

"the RIGHT of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

OK, I see what you are saying now but the "Bill of Rights" are just the first ten amendments to the constitution itself and therefore are part of it (add ons)

So what is your problem

My "problem" is government getting ever more intrusive and mandating what I must own.

I am a gun owner by choice.

In my life time I have run into people who I can only hope are not gun owners and I am sure you have too. I am not talking about criminals either, just people who have a screw loose, don't have both oars in the water and have managed to escape the notice of people who could legally call the men in white coats on them

Scary to think that they may not have ever considered owning a gun until some government authority told them that they had to own one.

Thanks for posting the photos -- I grew up a few miles from Gueda Springs and swam in Salt Creek near the sanitarium as a teen-ager in the 70's.

As to the topic, given the very rural nature of the town (maybe 500 residents, major business is the local grain elevator), the new law is mostly an empty gesture with most people already meeting the requirements out of common sense. The more important effort for RKBA in Kansas would be one that results in concealed carry. This would a real grass-roots organization to overcome a RINO legislature and carpet-bagger governor. Glad I don't live there anymore...

the fine should be a lot more than ten dollars.

I think the fine is symbolic as is the law. They probably have no intention of fining anyone.

Some years ago I read about a town that passed an ordinance making it illegal for anyone to beat up a flag burner, with a $2.00 fine for the first offence and $3.00 for each offence thereafter.

All it is is an invitation for some dumass liberal to come to that town, burn a flag, take his beating, then sue the hell out of that town saying that their law incited the beating.

My own town has an ordinance concerning possession of small amounts of marijuna, as I understand it the arresting officer has the discretion of charging the possessor with an ordinance violation or violation of a state law. The difference being the ordinance violation is a lot more expensive and goes to the town's treasury, not the states but does not go on the violators record.

Just a money making racket for the town.

I think Massachuesetts had a similar law, and so did Virginia and Connecticut.

"Next year's headline: GEUDA SPRINGS CRIME RATE DROPS TO ZERO."
What's the current crime rate in Gueda Springs? I'll wager it's either -0- or close to it now.

Will there be "jack-booted thugs" kicking in doors & forcing guns into the hands of any citizen not complying with this new law?

An interesting (if difficultly formated) read, thank you.
Like to see whole thing in more coherent file.
Thanks

It is a very short article so I hope you even took the time to read it. Hint: there is a $10 fine.

I'm all for guns..but I believe this is purely symbolic..how would the county enforce this act?? Knock on everyone doors and ask them to present their fully loaded fire-arm??

Ah man if that happened in my town not only would I be fined $10, but I would end up in Prison for up to 5 years for complying with the ordinance...Guess I would have to get a permission slip from the City or the Police Chief and they could argue it out with the BATF.

In case you are wondering I am not a felon...I'm just considered a non-immigrant alien, and guns and bullets are a no-no for me according to the BATF (even though my state licensed me for a firearm and the FBI did a background check)...

--Not everyone thinks the ordinance is a good idea. Sumner County Sheriff Gerald Gilkey says the ordinance makes him concerned for the safety of his offices when responding to calls, especially those involving domestic violence. --

Maybe the Sheriff would be happier in another line of work?

A friend of mine grew up on a farm out in the middle of nowhere. She said they always kept a shotgun, (or rifle), by the back door just in case. You never knew who or what might show up, planning to do harm. I asked how they kept the babies away from the loaded gun. She said you just teach the kids to leave it alone, like you would an open flame, or any other danger! They never had an accident! We have had shotgun and rifle in the house the entire time we were rearing three kids, who are now grown. NO PROBLEM. You simply teach your kids NOT to touch the guns if DAD is not with them, and you teach them NO Means NO!
