Gun Mandate Geuda Springs Associated Press

Residents in the tiny south-central Kansas community of Geuda Springs have passed an ordinance requiring the heads of households to equip their homes with firearms and ammunition.

The City Council voted 3-to-2 earlier this month in favor of the ordinance. Council members believe it's necessary to provide protection in a town that does not have its own police force and relies on the sheriff's department for protection.

Under the ordinance, non-complying residents could be fined ten dollars. The ordinance has not gone into effect.

Not everyone thinks the ordinance is a good idea. Sumner County Sheriff Gerald Gilkey says the ordinance makes him concerned for the safety of his offices when responding to calls, especially those involving domestic violence.

The town's city attorney, Thomas Herlocker, plans to ask the council to reverse itself on the issue.

"Council members believe it's necessary to provide protection in a town that does not have its own police force and relies on the sheriff's department for protection."

My local news here in Oklahoma did not mention this part. Instead they just mentioned that gun requirement and called it "bizarre"

Oh I completely agree. Every household should be equipped with firearms and ammunition. The police are the ones that should be disarming.

You know this will be challenged and the challenger will win don't you?

I have aconstitutional right to own a gun but I damn sure don't want a government body making a law that I MUST own a gun.

No way! You know how low the crime gets when laws are passed and have been passed where citizens are forced to carry guns? It goes to nearly nothing!

I think we should be required to purchase at least one gun a month...and if we can't afford it...there should be welfare for that too.

You sound like a friend of mine. The guy has more guns than he knows what to do with. He bought a BB gun recently and I asked him why....He said, "A feller never knows when he might need one"

I had thoughts about this as well. I was hesitant to come to this conclusion, but I saw that many other Freepers were ok with it.
