A quick search did not get me any Illinois mandatory ownership laws. I was pointing out only that such laws were common, and therefor not contrary to the notion of a liberal gov't as held initially in this republic.
Liberty, not libertarian or libertine idealism, was the chief concern of the framers of the republic, which tends to run at times contrary to both modern liberalism and conservatism, the latter in the notion that many moderns do not seem to want a strong government any more than they want a large one. However, a strong one is necessary to defend the people and prevent anarchy.
I see your point about hoping some of your neighbours would not be required to own a gun. But I am somehow sure that the same problem existed then as well, and I don't know a good solution to it (some callous ones come to mind).
Given the notion of nutty people also owning, regardless of whether required to or not, I think your decision to do the same is prudent - was not/would not be making any assumptions about your choice based upon your post, sir, nor disparage you either way.
Mmmmm, hmmmm........sounds like you got yerself a little Lefty bedbug in your local news organization. Time to ask for someone's job, if you get the chance.
Like the tag line, too.
"LG"
I respect your dissenting opinion, but the Framers settled that issue in 1787. You are a member of the Kansas Militia, which is the People in arms, and under the Militia Act you're supposed to own a serviceable firearm. May I suggest a Bushmaster, or maybe an AR-10? If you're strong, and stoutly built, and have been blessed with a measure of prosperity, perhaps you could go the $3600 for a Dragunov SVD, or maybe the $6500 for a Barrett M1982, and start using your wide-open Kansan spaces for a little long-range marksmanship training.
The larger problem is that liberals have been swarming the J-schools for 40 years.....political motivation (for "reform", "making the world better/more liberal" etc.) became the prime impetus to enter journalism for over half of Columbia Journalism School's entrants in the 1960's, and the proportion of people so motivated in journalism has grown ever since, reaching something like 90% in the 1980's and 1990's. And they're just about all liberals, and people who aren't, get the same kind of treatment Andy Rooney's daughter got, and Brent Bozell, and every conservative news maven and pro that you ever heard of. Bernard Goldberg has been dumped on viciously ever since he spilled the beans. Conservative journalists IMHO practically have to buy a job.
Sounds like you need to get with those station owners and some like-minded conservatives, and have a heart-to-heart about bringing some balance to the local journalism cadre. Cleaning house, if necessary, to avoid letting these people poison the well of opinion for the next 30 years, and turn the kids into little liberal zombies.
Come to think of it, your fellow-citizens might want to check up on the local teaching cadre, too.
Could the city then supply "Please don't rob me" signs for the people thus registered?
If you were drowning and someone threw you a rope, you would bitch that it was wet.
Semper Disgusted
I am a gun owner and furthermore I don't need your disgusting vulgarities. As I said before learn to read before mouthing off.
Glad you posted it....While the article is "insightful" to our current state...The name Geuda Springs brought back some memories.
When I was a kid....I visited my grandparents in Ark City, KS. Not far from Geuda Springs...
I remember once finding an old empty bottle marked "Geuda Springs Mineral Water"...in a creek bed.
Thanks,
