Were it not for a slice of luck, it could have been a little Japanese boy who fell into the single-glove clutches when the superstar stopped blowing bubbles and decided to pan in on peter at Neverland, according to Shukan Bunshun (12/4).

Michael Jackson has long enjoyed an affinity for Japanese children and, were it not for earlier allegations of sexual abuse of a little boy than the one that resulted in the reclusive singer's Nov. 20 arrest, it could well have been a Japanese child playing at tinkerbell at Jackson's Nevada ranch.

Jackson has displayed an inordinate interest in rising sons on his forays into Japan, as the insider explains while recalling the singer's first tour here in 1987.

"I remember he put in a request for 500 kids to join him singing on stage. And they could only be boys. Well, it was a tough ask. Girls make up most of the elementary school choirs. We managed to scrape through enough boys in the end. But it wasn't easy," the music industry source tells Shukan Bunshun. "After all that, Michael then came out and told us he'd like to invite a number of children to stay with him in his hotel room. I wasn't directly involved in that handling that request, so I can't say for sure what happened, but I think at least 10 elementary schoolboys stayed with him. Of course, nobody talked about abuse at that time, and I want to believe it didn't happen."

Five years later, Jackson was back again on his third tour of the country and, once again, surrounded himself with pre-pubescent children.

During that stay, then U.S. Ambassador to Japan Michael Armacost held a reception attended by glitterati from both countries. The ambassador asked guests to help out Jackson's Heal the World Foundation.

Wacko belted out a couple of tunes at the party, accompanied by demands for more little children singers.

"From memory, I think it was only boys he would let up on stage with him. During this tour, Michael visited lots of elementary schools, but he only ever looked at the boys," a coordinator for the ambassador's party tells Shukan Bunshun. (Jackson) was always surrounded by special police (bodyguards), who only ever moved away when he wanted to give the kids a hug. Of course, we also got his requests for choirboys."

During the party, Jackson announced that he would invite four winners of a composition contest for kids aged 8 to 12 to stay at Neverland for a world children's forum he was planning to hold there the following year, 1993.

Jackson's Japanese handlers selected the contest winners and preparations were made for the trip to Neverland.

But, with four Japanese kids just days away from being whisked off to Jackson's lair, the plans ended up in pixie dust, Shukan Bunshun notes, as the singer was branded by child sex abuse allegations he hushed up with a 19.5 million dollar payment to his accuser.

I can remember being stationed in Sasebo, Japan in the late 80's and early 90's. I'm not sure what year it was but Jackson was doing a concert in Fukuoka, Japan. And word got out that Jackson was driving down to Sasebo. He wanted to visit the elementary school on base. Anyway I didn't have a clue. I was going out for some early liberty and the gates had military police and Japanese police all over the place. To make a long story short I heard from a couple of the mothers the next day that they had all the kids in the gym and Michael came on the stage and the kids along with the mothers went nuts. Well all he did was take a good look at the kids for 15 minutes or so and then left, didn't say a word. I can still remember the mothers saying very strange. I thought the same.

I think his "preferences" are nurtured. The family, that was just the fertile soil. Someone, a group of someones, saw Micheal's seed of inclinations -- and his amazing musical and showmanship talent -- in that soil as a growth that would be useful if managed well. So they gardened him.
