What's the New "Pager" Icon About? (Vanity Request for Help)
Free Republic

Posted on 12/07/2003 4:31:44 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

I noticed this morning that a little speaker icon had popped up next to my screen name, and when I let the browser settle on it, the word "pager" appears. When I click on it, it just takes me to my comments, same as clicking on "New Messages."

Could someone please explain this innovation? Thanks.

Buggy little pain in the butt, is what it is.

Unless it's one of those boutique ideas that MS builds into their latest release of Explorer, that they then go around suggesting that people add to their sites for "enhanced functionality".........and which are designed to drive people to the new release.

Or am I being too conspiratorial and untrusting?

I've never had a problem with it, and I've used it for a couple of years.

I've used it on Netscape 4, 6, and 7; Explorer 5, 5.1, and 5.2; and Safari 1 for both Mac OS 9 and OS X. Can't recall if I've ever tried it in Opera.

I know folks who've been using it in Explorer and Netscape on Windows in that time as well.

Mine doesn't seem to chime, but if I click on it it will take me to my comments.

It should be sound enabled.

I was wondering what it did, so I clicked on it...

A little diaglog box came up telling me not to click on that icon again!

It's got to be either the moose or the FBI.

Actually, in my limited experience with this stuff, certain applications do not get along when running simultaneously. You may have had something running prior that contributed to the crash.

How do I enable the sound? My computer sounds are generally working - for example I get a sound when a message arrives to Outlook Express.

Morning, Mimi. ;-)

(I've been waiting to say that.)

BTW, mine works fine, but the little "click" from the page refreshing every minute will drive me nuts. I'll have to go digging for the way to disable that.

Good point. Running java apps from different sites is perilous.

I keep the pager open in IE, and do most of my regular surfing with Safari. MLB.com has java on every page, and I go there a lot, so I do it in a different browser than the one on which I'm running the pager.

Once you get it running for you, it's a real time saver, especially if you're posting on multiple threads.

It's not the sound for New Mail Notification; I'm trying to figure out which one it is right now.

All,

Please stop clicking the icon. Everytime someone does it, my garage door opens and my microwave starts.

Thank you.

On my computer, Under Control Panel, Sounds, it's the the "Alarms" sound under "Classic Phone Tools."

Do you have that one?

Mine used to chime, but it doesn't anymore. I think it's broken.

However, it still lights up if I have new posts or mail, so I haven't thrown it away yet.

You get an audible click when it refreshes?

A couple of things I've noticed. Occasionally, I get chimes for no reason. Also, sometimes the default pager page is white with gray borders, and sometimes it's a blue background with my state flag. No rhyme or reason as to when it's one or the other. I've seen both just in the time I've been on this thread. Maybe John knows.
