My 1970 version of Roget's Thesaurus.
The word "clinquant" is found therein, with the word "sham" beside it! It refers the reader to.....614.13.
After going to 614.13, the words therein illuminate "clinquant"; fake, phony, cheat, sham, mock, imitation, CLINQUANT, counterfeit, hoax, fraud, and imposter.
Any more questions?
I must admit though, there were no references to the 900 FBI Files or the travel office, or the rest of all the criminal stuff.

my Theasaurus doesn't have it. My crossword dictionary says Tinsel and my big dictionary says ...glittering with or as with gold or silver; tinseled. Imitation gold leaf: tinsel Dear UnVeiled Lady., please read post #1. You will see that your "recent" "meaning" has already been mentioned. It is a recent interpretation of the word.............sort of like a little Clinton political correctness.
I am assuming that you are a younger person.
Here is a clue for you. Trust the older source material!
