Some Bush bashing, but some comprehension that SF is a sh*thole and needs help.

It's a tough thing for "progressives" such as Miss Morford to face, but the fact is that you get what you reward, and if there are too many gangrenous homeless and needles between him and his favorite tourist haunt, the problem might just be that that "bubble" he's so proud of was responsible for putting them there. "BushCo" had nothing to do with it.

intelligent political discussion I have always found that intelligent political discussion with these people entails agreeing with them.

Hell Freezes, Devil Outraged...
I'm astounded- this is the first passably-articulate column from this mincy-bird I've ever read-- perhaps there's hope for him, after all.
One question? Can anyone translate this:
Much of BushCo's 'Murka hates S.F.

We are a bubble. And we are proud of the fact that we are a bubble, no matter how many cracks and fissures and Starbucks logos appear in its walls. And what happens to all bubbles??? They go POP!

You're being far too generous.
I've seen more lucid writing from a sophomore english comp. class. This little pantywaist is just annoying. Period.

See, word has it that San Francisco's in a bit of a shambles. A pale quivering scantily clad altar-boy ghost of what it once was.Speechless. Just speechless.

In short, we are disliked -- openly feared, even -- because we are different. Very different.Ms. Morford actually gets one right!
San Francisco is different. How many other cities in " 'Murka" pay vagrants to harass their residents? How many other cities tolerate people dropping their pants and taking a dump on the sidewalks, in plain view of the public? How many other cities proudly proclaim that one of their locals is a member of the Taliban?
That's why so many "disilke" SF, Ms. Morford. You and your fellow butt boys have turned a beautiful American city into a Third World hellhole. And then you come out and call this "progress."

Markie, I don't hate San Francisco. Under the debris, it's one of the great cities of America, arguably of the world. Under the debris, it's a beautiful town. There's nothing quite like driving up, or riding the SuperShuttle, up from SFO...skirting the hills at the San Mateo county line, and driving right into that postcard view. There's fine dining, fine drinking, great nightclubbing...gosh, Markie, there are even some good people up there, even if they're liberals. And there's your problem. The last time you had a liberal Republican, let alone a Neanderthal like me, as mayor was when I was a toddler. I love San Francisco, Mark. I just can't stand what nearly forty years of your political allies have done to it.

Whew! Things are back to normal, Mark Morford is blaming George W. Bush for everything that's wrong in the world (that airplane advertising column had me worried). Maybe s/he's just upset because San Francisco elected a heterosexual, even if he was a Democrat.

The City is filthy. Garbage everywhere. This is deeply embarrassing and obnoxious. Mysterious smells emanate, and not just from the guy with the massive teetering shopping cart of overstuffed garbage bags. Tourists who flock in from parts unknown but apparently mostly from Asia and Germany for a stroll on the Golden Gate Bridge and a well-armored tour-bus ride through the Castro and maybe a large steamed overpriced crab at the Wharf are forced to step over 16 panhandlers and 17 syringes and something that looks like a puddle of human bodily fluid but could very well be the last remains of webvan.com.
Gosh, Mark, you make SF sound like even more of a festering pisshole than I'd imagined. How could you sensitive, artistic types turn such a beautiful city into such a den of depravity, filth, and rampant social disease, unless you derived a perverse pleasure in wallowing in that sort of environment?
Aren't you SF liberals responsible for Willie Brown? I mean, At the very least, when you pass out the needles to the junkies and condoms to schoolchildren, you should give them a trash bin to dump the used ones in, huh? Don't blame that on the new mayor.
Oh yeah - you referred to San Francisco as:
"A pale quivering scantily clad altar-boy ghost of what it once was."
How Freudian. Is this some repressed childhood experience you're hinting at? The way your spittle flies when you talk about the church, I always suspected you were a failed Catholic. Your homo-erotic fantasies involving the church seem to be quite strong. Is that how you became such a raving queen?

We got problems. To stroll down historic Market St. from, say, 10th down to Fourth is to walk the gauntlet of misery and sadness and lots of screaming ranting wildly gesticulating hissing spitting psychotic gangrenous homelessness, with no end in sight. I don't care how noble or altruistic or perky you are. That walk will hammer your soul and embitter your humanity as you scramble for some disinfectant. He should have laid hands on them.

Look at a map; three bridges are all that connect SF to the real world.
