Saturday, December 20 was a cool, beautiful day with a cloudless blue sky. A great day for a FReep at the Columbia Post Office (unlike the preceding Saturday when 7 inches, and counting, of blowing snow kept all of us cooped up in our homes). But yesterday we were out again, in full force.

I actually arrived about 15 minutes early, only to discover that one of the lead peaceniks was already at his post. Not to be outdone, I joined him at MY post. Moments later, Snowflake arrived. She was followed by Bluesagewoman. We enjoyed the usual ratio: three of us and 16 of them.

Some time during the hour BSW made a comment that caused all of us to laugh. She said, "It's interesting that we're all women on our side cheering for our men, while they're all guys on their side and too wimpy to go over there and fight." Or something like that. What a lark!

For a few minutes, the peaceniks held a white painted sheet which had the words, "We have guided missles and misguided men." Yeah: Howard Dean, Dennis Kucinich.... They must have realized how much we enjoyed that sign, because they took it down quickly.

Finally, the words and encouragement from passersby make it all worthwhile. One lady said, "Thanks for being there." From another, "I appreciate you guys standing out here;" and a total of 21 thumbs-up during the hour (including one policeman on a motorcycle). It really was a great day!

My family is thankful to God this Christmas. Our son and daughter will be home to share this Holy day with us. There are so many families across America that will not have their loved ones present. But they carry on and do the best they can and are an inspiration to all of us.

Thank you for taking a stand and thank you for reminding all of us how important it is to do so. We cannot forget what our brave young people have done and continue to do for us. Ever.
