ranger will be on Bill O'Reilly's Radio Factor radio show on Friday. I think its 12-2PM live and replayed afterward. He is going to talk about the lack of uparmored HMMWVs in Iraq and the need to make modifications to vehicles in the field.
The O'Reilly Factor Radio show on Friday from 12-2 PM will discuss various topics including armored humvee production or lack thereof. Given the excellent commentary on the FR threads on this topic, I'd love to see a wider audience involved. Unfortunately the military isn't commenting much on the topic and civilians can only carry the conversation so far. Perhaps in some manner we can get more uparmored humvees or other alternatives out the factory door and into iraq and save a few lives.
The show is rebroadcast at various times in syndication during the day. The website below can direct you to stations and times in your area if you are interested. Station Finder
The call in number is 1-877-966-7746. (1-877-9-NOSPIN).

The lack of light armored vehicles has been discussed in the specialty press for a couple years now. When side armor comes in the mines will go under the road surface. The need for specialized vehicles in the Israeli RAM class has been obvious for operations in Iraq since long before the invasion, even to me, and I am an amateur.
In 2002 the Army tried to buy some German light APCs designed for this service, but the Germans wouldn't sell. The Israelis make the best machines at the best price of this type but Israeli machines are an obviously non-starter politically.
There are a bunch of good designs on the world markets, but unfortunately none are made in the USA. Most designs look to me to be based on South African designs from the Namibia period. The Israeli approach is better, less "spam in the can".

What I am saying is that HMMV and other soft skin vehicles are not appropriate for the Iraq situation. Easy to fix. In every war it is found that peace time designs are too vulnerable to fire.

The post you paged me to quoted some authority about the M1 Abrams, "The current engine, the AGT1500 turbine, is fuel guzzling, has poor reliability and high maintenance costs, he said."
Been saying that for years. The engineering problem in armored vehicle engine design is not high power and light weight, the problem aircraft have, and the problem most appropriately addressed by a gas turbine. The problem in design of an armored vehicle engine is high power and high compactness, since volume inside the armor is at such a premium. Any solution needs to address fuel logistics, maintenance difficulties, etc., of course, though for an armored vehicle the trade offs are not very much like those on an aircraft.
The German Leopard II engine with added on air filtration is probably the best available tank engine at this time. A diesel, not a turbine.
The Russian solution to this problem, typified by the old T-34 engine, is interesting. Since a tank lasted only a minute or two of contact with the enemy an engine that lasted 500 hours or less was plenty. Worked OK in practice against the Wehrmacht.

COMBAT SUPPORT: China Clones the HummerJanuary 1, 2004: A Chinese aircraft company (Shenyang Aircraft) has developed a light truck that looks like an exact copy of the American M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (also known as the "hummer".) The new Chinese vehicle is called "Zhanshen," ("God of War") and was recently shown to journalists. It is not known if the vehicle will be offered to foreign armies. While it is not uncommon for vehicle manufacturers to offer products that match those offered by a competitor, it is rare to build a duplicate of the other firm's vehicle. That could be grounds for lawsuits from the American manufacturer of the hummer. This would be likely if China sought to sell the Zhanshen overseas, but not if the truck is just used within China.
