[Moderator's note: threads regarding immigration issues and border issues have been spiralling out of control for some time on Free Republic. This is going to change. Fair warning: this would be a very poor thread to engage in flame warring, flame baiting, or otherwise being needlessly instigative. If you have not yet read this thread, you may want to before engaging in the debate on this or other similar threads. If there are any questions regarding the new scrutiny of these threads, please take them to that thread rather than cluttering up these threads.

Up until last night, people had been very cooperative with this effort, and for that I was grateful. Last night, I think there must have been a full moon or something, but we'll get that straightened out.

Thanks, and happy Freeping.]

Sean Hannity just used the word "asinine" in regards to any immigration change until we gain control of the current immigration situation.

My view on race guided by Antonin Scalia's concurring opinion in Adarand v. Pena: "In the eyes of government, we are just one race here. It is American." I don't think that prospective American should be judged on the basis of race either.

To be blunt, the failure of the immgration restrictionist crowd to police its own ranks makes me think that there is no problem among that crowd with bigotry that Mr. Francis and VDARE engage in. I find that unacceptable.

Good sense. Do people really think we are suddenly going to deport thousands of these aliens that have been here for years? Now I don't see any reason they should be on our SS system though. Seems to me SS should not be withheld for noncitizens. And temporary work programs should be possible with a way of tracking and enforcing length of stay.

Wouldn't it be more effecient to just fly straight to the US?

Incidentily, you will be glad to know that I have been stopped by the INS twice! The first time they (temporary) thwarted and evil plot on my part to help fix the delapidated freeway system in California. After I moved back, I went back for a weekend to hang out with a bud. Got to spend half an hour with 'em again while they made sure I wasn't up to my old highway designing highjinks, all of which are legal. The only other person I have ever heard of is the Canadian wife of my American bud, they got to spend lot's of legal money to get the paperwork through so that she could get her work visa. I could see the dilemma though, although she is now working as a much in demand teacher in California, probably would have been best to see if she spoke spanish first, as that would be most useful for communicated to the kids filling up the schools. That INS, man, their something....

Anyway, I just don't have much respect at all for Hannity as a thinker. Come to think of it, I have none

Hannity thinks? When did he acquire this new skill? I must have missed it.

So, I guess Mr. Hannity would rather hold the status quo.

Take no steps, make no changes, try no solutions.

Good conservative stance.

So, are you saying that we do not enforce current immigration laws in this country?

Asinine, insane--call it what you will, but in the long run it just isn't right to grant these people amnesty when they care not a whit about this countrys laws.

My understanding is that Hannity is for the legal status quo but against the "status quo" of the lack of enforcement, favoring more enforcement of existing laws. Am I reading him correctly?

In fiscal 2003, we apprehended (and turned back) nearly one million people at our SW border. There were also nearly a million voluntary returns by people apprehended by the INS.

Saying that we have "open borders", or that we do not enforce immigration laws because there are still people getting in illegally, is like saying that we do not enforce laws against murder or robbery because there are still murders and robberies going on daily.

That's pretty much the way I got it. Enforce laws now before any liberalization of the immigration laws.

If it was decided that noncitizens should be excluded from SS, that's another option. In that case, however, it would mean that a noncitizen would be even cheaper for an employer than a citizen, since the employer would avoid their share of SS tax on a noncitizen.

If they pay into SS, then they are certainly entitled to benefits.

Of course the problem is the welfare State, but we'd rather point to the symptoms of the disease and call them the cause, than address the actual disease itself.

ROTFLMAO!!!

I was just slumming over at LP, and the paranoia is unbelievable!

Not only is every new LePer suspected of being me if they don 't tow the "hate FR" line, but Neil, the moderator for that paragon of First Amendment rights known as "Liberty Post", is banning accounts for the crime of "suspicion of being Luis".

This is really great!!!!

Hey Freddy!!

"Then I’ll be aroun’ in the dark. I’ll be ever’where - wherever you look. Wherever they’s a fight so hungry people can eat, I’ll be there. Wherever they’s a cop beatin’ up a guy, I’ll be there. If Casy knowed, why, I’ll be in the way guys yell when they’re mad an’ - I’ll be in the way kids laugh when they’re hungry an’ they know supper’s ready. An’ when our folks eat the stuff they raise an’ live in the houses they build - why, I’ll be there. See?" -- Steinbeck

LP's funny.

I went over there the other day, and it looks like half the inmates are supporting Howard Dean.

And everybody's PISSED to the gills! Lots and lots of angry posters!

Ugly stuff too. Now I know where all the anti-semites went.

"Find a way? Isn't tax evasion a crime in the states???"

Yes indeed it is. I don't know why these employers are not prosecuted. Everyone knows this scam goes on. It is common knowledge and there is basically no fear of prosecution.

I ask myself why there isn't a tax officer assigned to every established "day worker pick up area" to check the tax info on potential employers and potential employees. They send tax officers around to flea markets and antique shows to check that vendors have their paperwork and are actively collecting a few measly bucks of sales tax but you'll never see one at any of these day worker pick up areas. Makes you wonder what the heck is going on.
