I know several people personally that decided yesterday, after the speech, not to vote for Bush in 2004.

Why? Their plans dont go much further. You cant go much further. What they want is to make Republicans look bad. They have taken the position that they will not stand for a second class status among "guest workers".

I saw a piece last evening re: the housing market. It was pointed out that the job paid $8/hr. and if wages had to be raised (to attract "legals"), the house would cost $10,000-$15,000 more.</>

I don't know if your figures are correct, but even if they are, that is money which would be circulated in and driving the American economy and not Mexico's. Econ 101 my friend. Consumption in our economy boosts our GDP. The shift of capital (money sent home to Mexico) does not!

If the final bill includes a few things, I'll go along with it. First, all unpaid back taxes should be collected from "our guests" and the cost of all recieved benefits should be repaid to the providing government.
Second, any now-legal guest worker must remain employed and should be inelligable for unemployment benefits...period. If they can't find work they can find the door!
Lastly, any criminal act must be met with immediate expulsion of the worker and his family, citizens by birth or not!

There is no way that the United States can find and deport 8-12 million illegal aliens in this country, and even if we could, we would do more harm than good.

Rush just said we have laws against murder; do we just throw up are hands and not try to bring about justice? He said we could start deporting the illegals if we really wanted to.

Most murder cases are not solved but police officers with integrity try to solve as many as they can. Similarly,although it is impossible to find and deport every illegal alien, INS officials with integrity will make the same effort.

So should we now subscribe to the dimcrats principles and make the federal government responsible for providing a fair wage system.

No. I prefer the market place. If the need for hotel workers is so great and the supply so scarce, then the hotels will have to raise wages or figure out how to use their people better. I don't want the federal government to get involved except to secure our borders so we don't have illegal immigrants skewing the marketplace.

If I am not mistaken, there are strict penalties for employers who hire illegals in the proposed legislation.

It is already illegal to hire illegals. The problem is no enforcement. We're told the amnesty is unavoidable because we just don't have the resources to ferret out every employer who has hired illegals. At the same time we're told that this program is different -- that we will now go out there and do the enforcement we don't have the resources to do, which makes the amnesty necessary in the first place. Really inspires confidence, doesn't it?

Simple Solution...Enforce the Law...and Deport Now.

So we have to start out with employers being penalized I guess. But guessing the current laws are not strong enough or being ignored by local law enforcement. Which then comes back to the fact wether we have a set up a new department within INS or a new agency that checks each employer to make sure ALL of their employees are legal.
I guess my point is that we have to start out somewhere and Bush gets my vote for standing up and talking about the issue rather than letting it slide as it has been done for the last 18 years.

Please note that Linda Chavez is ignoring two glaring points:

1) Illegals suck up huge amounts of social service tax dollars. When they're "legalized" they'll have no fear of demanding more. They expect MY tax dollars to support THEIR families.

2) Illegals have anchor babies that are (stupidly) automatic non-deportable American citizens.

Jorge Bush conveniently ignores these two points also.

Both don't seem to mind vacuuming the pockets of taxpayers to subsidize workers and employers.

It's despicable.

The point of the current plan "proposed" by the president is NOT allowing mass migration (though enough people claim it is, but just saying it does not make it fact) but taking care of the current illegals problem in the country.

Which is contrived because if they can enforce this proposal then it would be even easier to enforce our current laws.

LOL.......One or two little "Anchor Babies" almost always works AGAINST any deportations of any of these lawbreakers. Also allows many a steady welfare check for the next 18 yrs.

I would venture to say that the US Is a nation of 260 million immigrants, thought most of them came illegally, and probably quite a few had checkered pasts and were fleeing their own countries to come to the land of opportunity. The differnce is, it could have been 200 years ago or 2 years go but we are still mostly all immigrants...

Oh, and by the way. Your question above about illegal aliens and their health care shows you are a newbie on here.

This is why so many of our health care facilities are going broke! They are using the emergency rooms and hospitals for their emergency and basic care. The law says they cannot be refused simply because they cannot pay and the government will not reimburse the care givers.

Where I live, we were affected quite a bit by 9/11. Hotels had to fire even illegal workers to keep themselves from shutting down and thus causing a huge ripple effect in the economy. There is no silver bullet solution to the problem and just shutting down immigration or mass deporation of illegals (which will never happen) will cause the local economy to go into a tank. But the point I make again is, that lot of Americans WILL not work in these jobs and its not possible or credible for hotels since we are using this as an example, to all of a sudden increase wages. I guess I am trying to bridge what I think should happen which is probably similar to your views and what goes on in the real world.

It isn't only illegal immigrants who abuse healthcare, Americans born and raised here do the same, default on their loans, and file for bankrupcy. No worries!

After September 11th, the US government deported Saudi women in the Detroit area, for their anchor baby scheme. The kids went home with their mothers.
