IMHO, just outlawing high fructose corn syrup and like substances from our food stuffs would go a long way toward solving the "fat" problem.

It amazes me... a bottle on the grocery shelf screams, "100% JUICE." Then you look at the label and HFCS is one of the ingredients. How can this be? HFCS does not exist in nature, it is manufactured.

But haven't you heard? Haven't you been watching the Hardee's and Subway ads? Bacon is a health food now! Yep, bacon, cheese, and plenty of ranch dressing are all just fine, as long as they're wrapped in a lettuce leaf or a low-carb wrapper of some kind!

Well, we'll see. With seemingly half of America swallowing this stuff (literally and figuratively), we should know soon. Will our average weight, waistline, and cholesterol levels decline?

My husband's numbers after 6 months on Atkins:
Cholesterol: 202 was 210
Triglycerides 130 was 386
Ratio: 4.81 was 7
Weight loss: 20 pounds

Doctor wrote on postcard, 'much better continue diet'

He'd changed from eating cereal every morning to eating bacon, cheese, and eggs every morning. And plenty of ranch dressing and whipping cream.

Fat is not bad for you. Fat does not make you fat. I just really think the former has all been a lie. Time will tell.

Any diet that discourages the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is ridiculous in my opinion

Atkins does NOT discourage the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, just not the high-glycemic ones.

We eat all kinds of berries, cantaloupe, peaches, kiwi, and vast quantities of vegetables barring potatoes.

We also enjoy the low sugar cranberry juice put out by Ocean Spray. It's just made with Splenda instead of sugar.

Zinc found in breast milk is better absorbed than that in formula milk.

There you go, now you know what to do for a good source of zinc!!

Atkins devotee here. 45 lbs lost that I could not lose by any other method, even fasting for days and days. Rosacea cleared, colesterol down, eyes not so dry. There are too many success stories to discount Atkins as a fad diet. I knew I was a carboholic and couldn't stay away from it. First two weeks on Atkins I thought I was dying, then the cravings just stopped and I no longer long for sweets, bread or potatoes.

I can't speak for the South Beach diet, but the Atkins diet does not prohibit fresh fruits or veggies. Heck, I'm on Atkins, and am living on a 50% salad diet (mind you, salad with MEAT. . . .). We just keep away from high-sugar/high-starch beyond a certain point, depending on where you are in the diet (induction, continuing loss, maintenance)

"IMHO, just outlawing high fructose corn syrup and like substances from our food stuffs would go a long way toward solving the "fat" problem".

That along with bleached flour and white rice. The three biggest killing substances in the American diet.

I'm glad Adkins is successful...Maybe it will force manufacturers to produce more products that are actually healthy. Refined foods are the main contributors in the cause of diabetes and heart disease.

I and several members of my family are sold on these low carb diets.

One thing bad about this diet is that it gets boring.

I do believe a healthier but similar diet is the Suzanne Somers diet.

Her diet is all about combining foods, but she stresses the low carb, high protein diet.

On her diet fruit is recommended but to be eaten alone on an empty stomach.

I have not tried her diet but listened to one of her tapes.I highly recommend it.

What I think was amazing about the Atkins diet is how much better I feel, including all the aches and pains I used to call arthritis disappeared within a few days of starting it.

Rosacea cleared,

I really wonder how many of these ailments have been caused by too much insulin?

"Its just amazing...anybody who thinks OJ isn't health nectar is seriously lame. "

I guess you'd rather people stay fat and drink OJ than lay off it for a while and lose weight?

I think most people would rather lose the lard and have you consider them "lame" than drink OK when they are on a diet.

By this time next year Americans will have resumed eating their pizza, pasta, and orange juice as if none of this ever happened.

I don't know, my 61 year old sister lost from size 20 to size 7, four years ago and has never gained it back. She changed her whole lifestyle including smoking which she had done since age 14.

This is only one out of many success stories I know of personally.

Do democrats eat meat?

They sure don't support the beef industry.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the Aktins diet is a bunch of BS. ....And yep, I'm aware that it works for some, although not all, people. I'm just saying that right now it's a fad, and like all fads, it'll fade away. But most of the serious folks / the ones the diet really helped will stick with it. ......like your sister (who lost weight on the diet well before it became the rage).

the atkins low carb thins os overboard now. i was just at the story and noticed signage for "Counting Carbs? Low carb bagels". It was for nasty lenders bagels type bagels. It was "low-carb" if you ate HALF a bagel. 9g carbs.

Who eats HALF a tiny bagel at a time?
