I agree with most of what you say here, however...I believe it's only a matter of time before the ILLEGALS take over, our guns are taken away, we kneel to the U.N., national ID cards are issued, etc,etc...

The bad part of it all is, it won't/hasn't mattered who is in the White House or who controls Congress/Senate. Incrementalism is and has been both parties majic bullet. The inevitable will happen. I hope I don't look back in 10 years and find this post to be correct.

Thank you for FREEREPUBLIC Jim, it's all some of us have to hold onto.

I think the question ought to be "Can the USA survive 4 years of divided govt with a Dem president?". Any rational analysis would be an emphatic "yes". Will the US survive 4 more years of Bush? Absolutely, but the hangover from the Bush party will take more than a few Tylenol to get over. Say "yes" to Bush and you endorse his big-spending, guns-and-butter socialism that will set the course for the RP over the next decade.

Reagan made the fatal mistake of choosing Bush Sr. as his VP and since then the RP, at least as far as prez nominees has been filled with establishment milquetoast big-government types. Give Dubya the green light a second time and you can bet the farm that the next prez nominee in line will be Jeb and yet another big-govt, free spending administration.

So what happens if we send Dubya packing? Well, we managed to live with the Clinton administration when it was checked by a Rep congress. Get in an inept socialist weenie who is soft on terrorism, and you practically roll out the red carpet for a Goldwater Republican to walk into the White House unopposed. Let Kerry get into the WH and bow to the UN, push for Kyoto, and do all the whacky new-world-order type things you think he'll do and the public will be clamoring for the polar opposite of the Dems. In the long run we are better off without Bush because despite the WOT dust he is kicking up, he is as much a socialist as any of the Dem candidates and the only hope for a non-socialist candidate out of the RP is to reject the current offering.

Most democrats in late January of 2004 are living in some sort of an alternate reality created by the drumbeat of an out-of-control spin machine. They no longer represent anything or anybody who could support a political party either with votes or with money; nonetheless they feel some they have some devine mandate to rule irregardless and they're long past caring what they have to do to accomplish that. The fact that no normal person would have anything to do with them is reflected in their leadership and in the rogues gallery which constitutes their primary contendership.

If the situation weren't so dangerous, it would be funny. Democracy is a good system for governing a reasonably homogeneous group of people with shared ideals and values; it is not a reasonable system for sharing power between two groups of people who hate eachother and/or do not trust eachother to play the game fairly.

Long term, there are only two reasonable solutions starting from now: either the country has to be split up, or the democrat party has to be so totally marginalized as to eliminate the threat it poses.

What Bush and Rove appear to be doing strikes me as correct, more or less. They are clearly trying to own the center, to have the republican party subsume every quasi-reasonable leftist tendency, and leave the democrats sitting there with nothing. I'm all for it IF a way can be found to let some third party, presumably the litertarians, break through and take over that number two spot. At present, that is pretty much illegal.

The one thing I can think of which would go the furthest in the right direction would be either a law or a constitutional ammendment requiring runoff elections.

Excellent post, unless one's leanings are toward our military wearing blue helmets, condoning the taking of innocent lives, and praising judges who mock our Constitution with their own ideology, irrefutable.

AMEN! We don't need higher taxes, more liberal/social engineering judges, more gun grabbing. Our military under Slick was drastically cut, under funded, all to many were on food stamps, because they didn't get pay raises. Which Dubya has given them several. Our military under the RATS was used as meals on wheels, and we got things like Black Hawk Down. Secrets given to China, bad deals cut with N Korea.

We may not always agree with Dubya on issues, but he is the BEST man for the job now.

Sit home and we get a return to all those things we've been gripping about for the past few years under Slick. Vote third party and it's the same.

I've found you often have to dig into what his proposals are to find out the media only gives you the sound bite they want you to hear. There is usually "accountability" in his plans. Something lacking with the RATS.

God Bless America and GW Bush.

Will Bush solve the illegal immigration problem? Probably not. But neither will Kerry, Edwards, Dean, Clark or Hillary. Chances are, they'd make it worse. Probably far worse.

He did make it far worse. By introducing an issue that didn't need to be introduced. By giving Democrats an issue they can run with. They'll beat him at this game.

Four years from now, the voting demographics are going to be tipped dramatically. We're talking an influx of millions. These people are not going to vote Republican, unless you are prepared to give them everything and anything they want. Are you prepared to do that?

It's going to be a sheer numbers game, and they will have the numbers. Just watch Hillary in the coming years.
