That was our reaction to the furor over the MTV-produced Super Bowl halftime show, which network President Judy McGrath described as "exciting" and "great" and marred only by "five seconds none of us knew anything about."

I totally agree with you. My husband and I pay for 100+ channels and watch about 10 regularly. Why am I forced to subsidize trash like MTV on my DishTV bill? I would be willing to change my satellite service to any carrier who would let me select the channels I want, and I would even be willing to pay more per channel to do so. Are you listening, Rupert Murdock?

This is an excellent point. The children in a poorly supervised home are fed a constant barrage of this bilge and are therefore more likely to engage in dangerous practices at a young age. The human damage resulting from this is incalculable.

At what point does the media become accountable? This is an industry where Howard "fart joke" Stern is the arbiter of taste.

All of the porn stuff aside for a moment, exactly what is the appeal of recording artists "grabbing" their crotches while belting out their tunes and having a bunch of half-naked dancers all around them bumping and grinding in some kind of really weird choreographed manner? I mean, think of the hours they must practice this kind of stuff. Don't they have to pay all those "dancers"? What do they add to the musical performance that makes it worth the huge amount of money it must cost to put such a production together? And what about the grabbing of the crotch by the main performer? How does that add to the music? Maybe somebody out there can explain that to me. I find it disgusting and repugnant. But others apparently think it is very entertaining. Is there anybody here who thinks that grabbing the crotch during a performance is entertaining and is there anybody here who comes away from a pop concert disappointed because the main performer didn't have scores of half-naked dancers in leather straps and buckles bumping and grinding? I really would like to know.

I used to go to rock concerts when I was young. I'd see The Cars, Jackson Browne, U2 (when they were just a young Irish band and Bono was not yet trying to save the world), Molly Hatchet, REO Speedwagon - those were a few of the bands I remember seeing. All these acts had pretty good songs and they played straight ahead rock and roll. No half-naked dancers bumping and grinding. No crotch-grabbing. No kids "moshing" up front. I feel so...innocent.

The subculture [which is more and more prominent in the US] which hates W hates and the War, and wants our foreign policy U-turned into a globalist erasure of national boundaries and all that makes America distinctive, also wants W's tax hikes to fail and people to lose jobs so W will not be re-elected. This crowd also directs the media and the entertainment industries. Their direction is aimed at an essential part of the same agenda: undermining the sesne of masculinity in young men so that self-control and the transcendance of sensual and sexual impulses is marginalized. This is why Heffner and the playboy philosophy was always intrincsically related to the leftward tilt in politics. [This is the real reason for the assault against men meeting in private, witness the attack on the boy scouts, private clubs, etc. The whole point is to destroy masculine identity. This is why the all-boys school has been eliminated. Even the supposed champions of the blacks will not allow an all boys school in the ghetto. The left fears masculine purpose and identity above all else. This is why it tries to smear any meeting of men as potentially homosexual. The left's use of homosexuality is a large topic. ]

The complicated fact here is that the trend of western civilization has in recent modernity been engaged in a self-critique of its purposes, which has cut the moorings out from under much of the ordinary [institutional] cultural guidelines. This chaotic usurpation of masculine purpose appears to the Islamist as a destructive and sinful exhibition. From the simple-minded Islamist point of view, this is why the West should be destroyed. Accordingly, the West's cultural influence is the most alarming and terrible thing that could happen.

Regretfully, the West's self-critique has been subject to being appropriated and subverted by the post-modernist [leftist] fakirs who have captured the western academic structure. Nonetheless, the critical impulse of the west is its only salvation. This fact creates a terrible tension between the traditionalists [of both Islamist and Christian culture] and the critical rationalists. Largely, the traditionalists want to take the fruit of an earlier age of rationalist spiritual inquiry and solidify those fruits by a mistaken intolerance to critique. The post-modernists [essentially leftist] try to opportunistically profit off of the clash of tradition and modernity and cynically cheer chaos in all its forms. This is why the left paradoxically supports the Palestinians, the Jihadists and the totalitarians of every stripe--who would instantly wipe out the left if they had power.

This is the underlying basis for the paradox which is described in the post. The terrorists hate us for our cultural left which hates us for warring on the terrorists. The left hates this war, most of all, because it and W as its symbol, represent a restoration of masculine purpose. That purpose is of debatable depth, however, and the depth of the restoration is open to the same question. In any case, the left knows what it must fear. That is why the commercials at the super bowl, and of course more widely, continually undermine men and have these almost obligatory shots to the male crotch and references to toilet paper and other bowel functions [ these delinquents are always pushing their limits, witness the horse fart]. These aims of the left often hook up with and subvert other unrelated movements: liberalism, feminism, civil rights, legal reform, ....

There are no perfect vehicles in this world and W is certainly not perfect. However, we do need to recognize what's what and where the essential forces are. The left will use any instrument of confusion to evoke chaos. Hence the media is its most useful and most cynical weapon. The attacks are never consistent and do not need to be. A thousand cuts are its goal. Thus the left would never change course if you were to show it that the terrorists would line them up first if they were to win. Individuals, of course, are a different story than any abstration such as "the left". But individuals have many motives and rational self-critique [and thereby, self-knowledge] is usually not a very strong motive.

I don't understand all the soft porn on TV these days (MTV videos, etc.). I know otherwise-respectable people who think "Sex in the City" is great. To me, it's a waste of time. If I want to see porn, I'll rent a real porn video. Otherwise, I want to see a comedy or sci-fi or a action movie.

Crotch grabbing was a behavioral tic common to young, criminal black men living in big-city slums at least as far back as the second half of the sixties. When I was in San Francisco during that period, I used to see it a lot among such residents of the Fillmore slum.
