The airwaves belong to the public at large

As objectionable as libs find Rush, they'd still agree that he's practicing political speech.

Watch the "Fairness Doctrine"

The Super Bowl half time show...and half of what's on TV today is indecent and immoral.

I don't disgree with that.

We have had a tradition of common morality in this country that has been completely corrupted in the last 30 to 40 years.

What is 'common morality'? The reason I ask is that my problem is what will be done in the NAME of it. Government thugs.

I say it's time to bring back those standards.

I saw the market should decide. I like my remote switch it gives me a choice. Not buying products is another choice.

But government, especially an unelected branch, is unworthy, and untrustworthy to make that type of decision. Up North in Canada, I see the hoopla from Don Cherry's remark on "French guys" from Quebec.

It's that law of unintended consequences that scares me.

That offends me. I guess you'd better be quiet now.

.. he says, a couple months after government outlawed broadcast political messages preceding elections.

Gee I can't imagine why, given the sparkling record of censorship and the charming people throughout history that have pushed it.

TV has been censored since it started coming into America's living room in the 40's. The standards and practices laws did a good job of keeping the crap out of your house. I think they did have a sparkling record. With the advent of cable/satellite the standards fell and continue to fall.

Force the cable/satellite company to give me ala carte cable/satellite programming and only pay for the channels I want to see and I will do my own "censoring".

Until that happens, fine the network/affiliate stations for violating the standards and practices laws that are on the books. Censoring does work.

"America's living room"? Do you mean the one in the White House? I had this weird idea living rooms were owned by individual homeowners.

The standards and practices laws did a good job of keeping the crap out of your house.

Well, you're getting closer: "Your house". Seeing as it's my house, I'll be the judge of what does and doesn't come in, thank you.

And as for "crap", I couldn't think of a better term to describe the dumbed down, bland, condescending, arrogant, elitist, propagandized insult to my intelligence that passes for programming today. Good think government is there to "help" me!

Force the cable/satellite company to give me ala carte cable/satellite programming and only pay for the channels I want to see and I will do my own "censoring".

You pay for channels you don't want? Did the cable company make you "an offer you can't refuse"?

Censoring does work.

"It always worked for me!"

Disagree. The Libs would not use the FCC to ban Rush per se but they use it to defacto ban him via a new fairness doctrine. If you play with fire(censorship), don't be surprised if it burns you in the end.

Your censorship non-sequitors notwithstanding, yes, I do pay for channels I don't watch. I have to buy the packages offered from the satellite if I wish to view the programming.

If you know of a satellite/cable company that will let you buy only the channels you want let me know which one that is. It would cut my satellite bill way down.

You don't have to buy anything. You choose to purchase their product.

You said: "Force the cable/satellite company to give me ala carte cable/satellite programming and only pay for the channels I want to see and I will do my own "censoring"."

Satellite company owners don't have to do anything for you or anyone else, but they choose to work hard to offer you something. And in return? You want to send guys with guns to bend them to your whims, as if they were slaves on your plantation and they weren't growing your favorite crops.

Well, if I ever move to Canada, I'll look it up (pun not intended).

What's the difference between Look Plus and Look Super? It doesn't look ala carte to me.

Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Castro, Pol Pot, etc. etc. etc. would have agreed wholeheartedly.

Today as we opine about this subject, there's a CINO Republican president who would most likely agree with your sentiments and support laws against certain types of speech that you may find offensive. The laws get passed. "Decency" is enforced on the airwaves by an FCC controlled by the son of the sitting Secretary of State. All is well with the world.

Then a Leftist junior Democrat senator from Massachusetts gets elected and appoints a fellow Leftist FCC chairman. Suddenly, porn reappears on TV, the so-called "fairness doctrine" reemerges, and right-wing radio talk show hosts and certain Internet web sites find themselves under investigation for "hate speech".

Think it can't happen? Maybe not this year but ...

Fast forward 4 years and replace "Massachusetts" with "New York" in the above paragraph.

The point of the story is -- be careful what you wish for when you support giving more power to the government. Maybe seeing Janet Jackson's boob on TV will not seem so bad after all ...

I almost wish they'd get their way, just to see the look on their faces when government beats them over the head with the stick they just handed it.
