My new dog Sam would jump in that pool for a ball in a heartbeat! But then he would procede to run around in the dirt getting himself all disgusting, leaving me no choice but to bathe him before he goes back into the house.

A lot of us do understand how you feel, and I would gladly share your pain if only I could.
I've had many pets throughout my life and nothing compares to the aching emptiness when one of them is gone.
My heart goes out to you, and to the Bush family today.
I lost my beloved Selma Lee last spring, and I still grieve.

Today, my owner lives in this house, and he has a new name. My favorite name for him is "Dubya," but everyone calls him "Mr. President." I just call him my best pal.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has been saving pictures of GWB and his dogs.

I had to have my dear Cassie, the designer coonhound, put down two weeks ago. She had cancer. I spent October through early February taking her out every two hours because she was on prednisone.

It hurts so much, and I miss her. Just like I miss my first dog Molly, who was a sheltie mix.

I am so sorry for the President's loss. On top of everything else he has to bear, this is just really sad.

Call me a sentimental sucker, but I feel their pain.
I'll never forget having my dog (with the original name "Spot") run away
when I was age six. And my mother (heavily pregnant with my brother) running
down the street to retrieve "Spot".

It was a simpler time...

It's gonna kill me when my Shepherd goes.

Yea, I remember my dad's! Best damn dog in the world and they assigned me to take him on his last vist to the vet..... Shit!

Zarek was the meanest home/person protector I have ever seen but yet the greatest and friendliest big dog personality around family, friends and kids that I have yet to see again. Unfortunately for Shepherds, they do not have the longevity that cats and many other dogs have and that is why I am hesitant to get one of my own.

When it's my Shepherd's time to go...I won't skip a beat in getting another one. She's been the first of that breed I've had, and I KNOW that's the only kind I ever want again.

WHAT a great watch dog...and yet playful and great with ALL the little kids that have come through this house.

Oh, Mr. President....we all hurt for you, SO badly today!!

I love our five Basenjis, and as I watch them get a little older each year, I can't even let my mind go to the day that each one will leave us. I guess I must have needed a really good cry today. This thread has just about done me in.

They are remembered like departed children

When life's end approaches old men realize that all that ever really mattered was old dogs, children, and watermelon wine.

The more I see of men, the better I like my dog.
~~Blaise Pascal

Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.
~~Mark Twain

Did you ever walk into a room and forget why you walked in? I think that is how dogs spend their lives.
~~Sue Murphy

Man is a dog's idea of what God should be.
~~Holbrook Jackson

My my, la de la, come on now it ain't too far
Tell your friends all around the world
Ain't no companion like a blue eyed merle
Come on now well let me tell ya
What you're missing, missing, 'round them brick walls

So of one thing I am sure
It's a friendship so pure
Angels singing all around, my dog is so fine

Yeah, ain't but one thing to do
Spend my natural life with you
You're the finest dog I knew, so fine

When you're old and your eyes are dim
There ain't no old Shep gonna happen again
We'll still go walking down country lanes
I'll sing the same old songs
Hear me call your name
