I think that some conservatives don't feel that it's right to ammend the constitution for things like this.

What other means are there to prevent courts from legalizing same-sex marriages?

Their actions might reflect their opinion that with Bush's numbers looking less robust that they might want to distance themselves a bit; no coattails, no gain.

What other means are there to prevent courts from legalizing same-sex marriages?Use Article III of the Constitution to restrict the purview of the federal courts.

(whatever you might think of the Constitutional Amendment idea)You don't dismiss this.
This is the sticking point.

A new amendment would quickly become as meaningless as the rest. The whole Constitution is held as meaningless by our legislators and courts. Save your energy...and ammo.

I've got news for them. "Distancing" themselves from Bush would be like a drowning man distancing himself from a pier.

If true, this is yet another political disaster for the GOP and Bush. Two of the top Repub congressmen are basically siding with John Kerry. Could they not have gotten their ducks in a row before Bush stuck his neck out? what a stupid, stupid party.
To: Recovering_Democrat
Because some conservatives believe the Constitution shouldn't be littered with ammendments to address every perceived ill.
Gay marriage is an issue that should be left for the states.
The Defense of Marriage Act ensures that homo marriages in Vermont don't have to be recognized by Alabama.

Drier: Just likes "cute guys".
Delay: Thinking about being next Speaker of the House-trying to demonstrate "moderation".
Shame.

Being lifelong conressionals, they have a slight fear that maybe, just maybe President Bush may not get elected. Because of that fear, they don't want to be "On the wrong side" of this issue. They would rather have the moral fabric of our nation ripped out than to take a chance and lose their seats in congress. Yes I am saying they are moral cowards.

I won't speak to Drier's district, but as a resident of DeLay's I can tell you that his district would vote for a dry turd if it had an 'R' after its name.
DeLay is not doing this to distance himself from Bush.

"I'd really LOVE to hear some ideas on why these guys aren't coming out and saying some GOOD things. "
I don't know but I rather doubt that this comes as a surprise to the White House. He is saying he would support an ammendment but is that the same as telling the Congress that they must craft such an ammendment, get it passed and then sent to the states for ratification? I dunno.

To: dfwgator
Any conservative who both opposes gay marriage and bitches about Bush's support for a constitutional ammendment is sort of like a guy complaining about the seating arrangements on a lifeboat.
Yeah, I got this nautical thing going today.
