The department I worked in had several electricians who were enormous. Every now and then they would have a fat-a-thon. One guy lost and regained 85 pounds in one year. Another guy weighed in at 325 pounds quite proudly in his Speedo (we had an industrial floor scale in the shop). He trimmed down to 275 and gained it all back too. He claimed he fills out his Speedo better over 300 pounds.
The Speedo guy also refuses to have a bank account, pays cash for everything, refuses to shake hands, crushed his TV with a tractor after the last baseball strike and hasn't watched television since, and cuts his grass and drives his tractor while doing farm chores in his Speedo's.
Fat loss episodes can make people a little nutty.

People should read the various Low Carb diet books such as The Schwarzbein Principle and Potatoes not Prozac. Both books go into detail on how the release of insulin is necessary for the production of seratonin. Basically the book says to eat low carbs during the day and eat a small potato or starch close to bed time and the insulin release works with the tryptophan from all the good proteins eaten earlier in the day and produces seratonin. The insulin release also helps you get into that good restful sleep.
However, too many people who follow the Atkins diet does not follow the dietary guidelines in Atkins and never increase their carbs to a high enough level to keep the seratonin levels right. I no longer have the mood swings from hypoglycemia since I started low carbing and cutting out the refined products.

Eww no! LOL
And I've heard that Atkins dieters should be avoided when it comes to public bathrooms. Even so, it was nice to lose weight.

Let me clarify, Potatoes Not Prozac states to go low carb during the day and eat a small potato or starch before bedtime to have the insulin release, Schwarzbein allows more carbs during throughout the day, but still limited. The book explains how all of the hormones, neurotransmitters etc, work together.

I'll ask you the same question I ask every Atkins person I encounter: How much and what type of exercise do you do?

I'll ask you the same question I ask every Atkins person I encounter: How much and what type of exercise do you do?1 hour three times a week, consisting of:
Bench press one warm-up set of 205 lbs, 2 sets at 255, one set 275.
12-18 minutes of stair machine.
4 sets of curls using 45 and 55 lb dumb bells.
Universal machines for other muscle groups.
Result? Prior to Atkins 240 lbs at 6' tall. No real change in weight over 3 year period. After 7 weeks "on" I have lost 15 lbs.

You need to do more cardio.
Is this exercise plan what you're doing now, or prior to Atkins or both?

Actually it depends. I work six days a week off the farm and in good weather or summer I run once around the block. In farm turns that is a country section, 1 mile on a side. It has never been strength or cardio-fitness that concerned me. Before 9/11 when I had just one job, I also competed in the Highland Games (Scottish heavy athletics). The problem is that one of my hobbies has always been baking bread. I make mine by hand from French bread to rolls to gingerbread and crackers. I used to be shy about butter on bread but with Atkins I found it was the bread that was doing me in, not the butter. No matter how much I worked or ran I always had extra around the waist. Of course, I also ate all the bread I could. Now as I approach 40 I start to think long term. So a slimmer me is in the works.

How strict are you on Atkins? My experience says that most people who do serious exercise tend to "modify" the diet quite a bit.

Several things:
Muscle is roughly 2x heavier than fat. So if the muscle mass is being increased, weight as the only measure is false.
Increased muscle mass also burns calories faster.
I understand cardio should vary from 20 to 60 minutes. 20 minutes gets the heart rate going, so it is good to do that first to warm up if possible.
To: Tench_Coxe
Yes, I'm aware of all that -- I'm a certified fitness trainer. However, the ideal amount of cardio is 30-45 minutes at least 3x a week.

I'm strict now because I have been only on it for three weeks. My exercise also isn't that great because of the current 10 hour days six days a week.
Once summer comes and I add in the farm work I won't be on Atkins other than to curb the bread. By then I will have lost all those years of bread around the waist. In summer I eat when I can, but it is never processed foods.
