The Atkins Diet and other weight-loss plans that limit carbohydrates can turn you into a sourpuss, a new study shows.
Scientists found carbohydrates help boost the production of serotonin which controls emotions and a shortage can lead to mood swings and depression.

You'd never know it from reading the Atkins threads here...

I would think that those who are not happy about their weight would also be crabby :-).

Hmmmm . . . would SSRIs help people lose weight, by keeping serotonin levels up and thus reducing the need for sweets and starches?
To: Senator Pardek
sorry, sounds like junk science, promoted by the junk-food
high-carb industry like General Mills, and archer daniels
midland.
They are desperate to discredit the low-carb
fanatics because its killing their bottom lines.
To: Senator Pardek
I am already crabby. Atkins or not.
Anyway, it may simply be the case the crabby people are more likely to try the Atkins diet vs. your more cheerful sort.

I used a sibling of the Atkins diet, called Protien Power.
Days 2-4 were the worst, though I can't say I was ill tempered. After that I felt better and better, and I was certainly not crabby.
I guess it depends on the person.

Wow I should try it...I'm a crab to begin with...it would unleash my full crabbiness potential...

ssri's can give you the munchies. i lost 10 lbs. on the depression diet.:)
if I eat fat and protein, my body tells me when I've had enough. When I eat carbs, especially sugar, I have to tell myself to stop.

Look here, if you post one more article on dieting and mood swings, I'm gonna cut off your arms and beat you with the bloody stumps - ya' hear me?
Now pass the sirloin....
To: GovernmentShrinker
They can. Some. But that's not a good reason to take them.
They're not harmless........

I used to work at a well known sausage/meat packing plant, and we got all the free meats we wanted in the lunch room 24/7. I figured it was the perfect opportunity for me to try the Atkins thing.
Well I had to do PLC installations and programming for machine controls. After a week on pure meat, I hated the world and took joy in the suffering of others.
Screw that.
I now exist on Atlanta Bread Company, Cappicolla Ham (the real stuff), good cheese, lamb, red wine, sweet tea, and espresso.
My disposition is now fine and I'm happier with the twenty extra pounds.
Anyone who goes Atkins is insane.

This explains why people can still feel hungry after chowing down on a large steak - because, while their stomachs are full, their brains are not making enough serotonin to stop their appetite. Hungry after eating a large steak? Uh, not me. Now, hungry after having a bowl of cereal with skim milk? Yeah. Very.

I take seratonin capsules to counter this crabby effect and make me more kindler and gentler. Unfortunately, it's also a great sedative, so I usually end up sleeping through any crabless sessions. The good news is I've lost 50 lbs so if I'm crabby, then you all can just kiss my...zzzzzz.

My two law partners and I were on Adkins during the year proceeding our extremely conflicted breakup. I'm becoming more and more convinced that the diet we were on (the three of us lost a total of 125 pounds) resulted in the extreme misunderstandings and hostility which resulted.

This reminds me of one of THE funniest Usenet posts from the past year:

But they contained zero carbs - she will or has to have lost weight if she was
consistent.

Well, I will take the mood my husband is on now with Atkins vs. his up and down sugar level mood swings on a carbohydrate diet. The sugar levels in his blood either made him sleepy or caused him (due to the drop) to go into rages.
I think this all depends on a person's individual body chemistry.
To: Senator Pardek
Yeah, well these reasearchers can just bite me!
(Seriously, though, I've been sleeping much better since purging all of those nasty carbs, and that alone has made me much less grouchy than before I started. Dropping 35 pounds in 2 months also has a bit of a positive attitude adjustment.)

When I tried Atkins pork rinds were part of my diet. And I did lose weight!
Also, I've been on various SSRIs for years and I have never known them to curb the appetite. In fact, it is quite the opposite. Everyone knows that anti-depressants (aka SSRIs) can cause weight GAIN. I just started a new one a week and a half ago, and I have gained 9 pounds. Today I started eating low-carb again to try to fight. Will try to stick to it this time.

I started the Atkins three weeks ago. I thought "What the heck". I am losing weight at a constant rate and now have total control over my apetite. So eating smart isn't crazy. The man in my head says so.
Besides my wife loves carbs and she has reverse PMS-(She's nice two days a month).
