NBC: Clinton Ordered Bin Laden Spared

A secret CIA videotape shows that the Clinton administration had pinpointed the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden a year before the 9/11 attacks, but declined to kill him because of White House orders that he should be taken alive.

The video, obtained and broadcast by NBC News, "illustrates an enormous opportunity the Clinton administration had to kill or capture bin Laden," the network reported Tuesday.

Images filmed in Afghanistan by CIA Predator Drones show a man clad in white robes who towers over his entourage. [Bin Laden is 6' 5" tall.]

The film was shot over Tarnak Farm, the walled compound where bin Laden was believed to live at the time. The layout of the buildings in the Predator video perfectly matches previous photos and diagrams of Tarnak Farm prepared by U.S. intelligence.

The clip left CIA analysts convinced they had located the man who in 1998 had bombed U.S. embassies in East Africa and whose agents, four years earlier, had detonated a bomb in the parking garage of the World Trade Center.

"It’s dynamite. It’s putting together all of the pieces, and that doesn’t happen every day," said William Arkin, a former intelligence officer and now military analyst for NBC.

Though President Clinton has boasted repeatedly that he issued orders to kill bin Laden, no action was taken when the White House finally got its chance.

Why not?

Gary Schroen, a former CIA station chief in Pakistan, told NBC that the White House had in fact ordered the CIA to do just the opposite - take bin Laden alive or not at all.

The order "reduced the odds from, say, a 50 percent chance down to, say, 25 percent chance that we were going to be able to get him,” Schroen told the network.

The directive effectively killed the plan and, along with it, the U.S.'s best chance to prevent the 9/11 attacks.

I can never see those pictures - of people jumping - falling - from the WTC without feeling utterly sick. We must never forget what happened that day.

So this revelation is released at the same time that we are informed of the arrest of the U.S.S. Cole conspirators? Did the Bush administration compile all of this for use at the BEGINNING of a campaign? In order to appease the growing sentiment within the G.O.P. that he must strike back against Kerry's outrageous assertions? Too premature for ammo of this caliber. I'm with you, something strange is going on here.

I think you have an uncanny knack...
I rarely talk politics or religion in public.I was taught it was rude to do so, overtly.
I always vote.Every election.Every time.
How many of the line talkers do you see at the polls?
If you are up to it, or in the mood for shocked expressions, a single one liner of factual information tends to make the loudly ignorant avoid using public que lines to expose themselves as what they are.Loud and Ignorant.
Try it!
It works.

Wow, I just watched the first segment with the footage. We HAD HIM ZEROED and DID NOTHING.

Well this fine kettle of fish...
Just toss this info into the spineless Republican Congrees and it'll settle on the bottom of that jello... like the Intelligence Commitee Memo did...

"There is a real power struggle going on in the Dem party. This is about getting Hillary etal out of power. I'd bet this story had Kerry's approval before NBC would run it."

Perhaps Ted Kennedy is unhappy that JFK Jr.'s plane crashed.

"Will Katie talk about it on the Today show?"

It all depends on what Couric is wearing. If she is wearing her black mourning clothes, then she's planning on at least making a reference to Clinton's failure to take out OBL (of course, she'll still spin it to blame President Bush).

If she's not wearing her mourning outfit, then her topic will be something totally irrelevant.

To be fair he was trying to settle the ME crisis by giving Arabfat everything he asked for while selling Isreal down the river. His daughter was splitting up Jeruselum so he could get that Nobel gold ring. How would it look if he killed a fellow terrorist to Afatboy?? Legacies are just too hard to change!

Myers tried to report on the Juanita Broadrick story, but was squelched by NBC. Either she pushed harder, or they resisted less, or they don't think it's a story, or they're throwing Clinton under the bus.

Whenever I go somewhere and overhear people in line at the bank, at lunch, at the gym, etc, they are always saying "I saw on the Today show" or "I saw on CNN." It's never "I saw on Foxnews" or "I read on freerepublic.com." And what comes after that usually sounds like DNC talking points.

That's my very same experience everywhere I've been. Perky Katie and CNN still have far too much influence on America, unfortunately. And so many women I've known or overheard are actually convinced that Hillary "has done so much for children"!

I'm actually baffled when I hear about Fox News' #1 cable ratings. Other than myself and several thousand FReepers, who is watching FNC?

....Will the media chase them down the same way they did to get their reaction on Bush's latest campaign ads? I doubt it.

Great point!

And no, they won't.

They just ran it on CNBC. Clinton was unwilling to declare war on Bin Laden because, for one thing, he was mired in scandal. He also had decided to treat terrorism as a law enforcement problem, rather than a military one. I also am amazed that they showed this fairly damning report.

Like what... what the hell is anybody going to do in today's political climate? The Dems secretly cheer Spain's shift in political fortune at the expense of Spain's dead and wounded. And now the cowards cheer on the Democrats. What a sick, sick twisted world we live in.
