In all seriousness, though - I hope this doesn't bring too much death and destruction to Brazil. They're not used to it (1st time ever, damn!) so I suspect they're not ready for it either.

I'll be donating money if this turns out to be as bad as I fear it might. I suggest others do the same. Our problems with Lula have nothing to do with this.

Interesting. Yeah they wouldn't have been able to see the "eye" before satellites, right?

If a hurricane hit Brazil in the 1940s then they could tell from routine wind speed measurements, even had they not known a hurricane was on the way...

And, stated differently, they could tell just the same as they were able to tell in the United States back in the 1700s and 1800s, obviously before satellites even existed..

For history : At this point

the brazilian government was still downplaying it, saying it was not a hurricane ... Hit region between Florianopolis and Porto Alegre. Region without major cities - still able to destroy 20,000 houses.
