**Vanity** Prayers for WWII Vet
sweet_diane

Posted on 03/31/2004 6:55:23 AM PST by sweet_diane

I am posting this in request for prayers for my parents. My father has been receiving dialysis for over a year now and has moved into the moderate stage of Alzheimer's. Over the last month it has been very difficult for him to get to the clinic for dialysis and even with the treatments he was always in pain and uncomfortable. My mother and my sisters and I have decided to stop the dialysis and hospice is coming in to help ease his pain.

Daddy was a B-17 pilot in WWII and received several medals including a Purple Heart. He was a Co-Pilot in the Aphrodite mission, the same experimental program that took the life of Joe Kennedy. In his later years he reconnected with the members of his crew of the 'Sittin' Pretty' and enjoyed participating in the 8th Air Force Historical Society. After service and graduating from the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!) he met and married my mother. In the late 70's he retired from the FAA where he was an Air Traffic Controller and he and my mother moved to the Gulf Coast of Alabama.

Stopping the dialysis treatment is like removing any form of life support, not an easy decision for anyone, especially my mother who has been his primary caregiver, yet it is the only right decision to be made. He has no quality of life and hospice can offer him comfort in his final days (at least that what we are praying for).

I thank God for every second of my 43 years with Daddy. He's a man of dignity and character no matter how hard the Alzheimer's tries to strip that away and I ask that my fellow FReepers would lift him in prayer in these, his final days.

Thank you so much for posting this skeeter. The first time I heard High Flight recited was at my uncles funeral as he too was a pilot (B-24 i think it was called?).

Another soldier fades away. He seems to have had a good life.

My father is a 78 year old ex-marine, he is still going strong, thank god, (sometimes too strong).

I once made the mistake of calling my dad that to his face.

Prayers are being said for your dad, your mom and for your entire family.

Whisper a "thank you" in his ear for his service to this great country... and God bless him as he begins his final journey home.

prayers going up for your father and hero. Your heart wrenching decision is a gift of love for your dad, giving him his remaining time within the family, loved, is a lot better than prolonging his misery. God bless him, you and your family.

Heavenly Father, we return to give You thanks that we can join Diane in prayer for the desire of her heart ... that the final days of her beloved Dad will be peaceful and free from pain. Look with mercy upon him, O Lord ... one who has served his family and his country so very well. Fill this time with warm memories and grateful hearts and family and friends who will hold them close, for the tears will fall and the hearts will break, but You are Comfort and Grace and Mercy. Walk with them, sweet Jesus, and lead them through this time of grief into the joy of life eternal. In the Name of Jesus, I pray, Amen ...

May the Lord fortify and sustain you and your family.
We are grateful for his service.
My family has now lost all of it's WWII participants. They were a special breed, I think.

sweet diane, thank you for sharing your personal story. I thank your father for his service. I offer prayers for this really tough decision. I know from experience it is very difficult, yet very necessary. May your healing and your fathers peace be quick.

May God hold you and your family close to Him now and give you peace. May He strengthen you for the decisions you will have to make and guide those who care for your father, in Jesus' name.

I'm posting this to you Johnny because of your pretty flashing sign :) Yet it goes to everyone.. thank you so much.

My father passed on to Glory last evening (Wed) while I was enjoying time with my church family. He had my mom right by his side and he was in his home.

I'm going to be with mom this morning and begin to make arrangements.

Again, thank you all so much for your comforting words, thoughts and prayers.
