It is safe to say that if John Kerry had lost his Senate re-election bid to Republican Gov. William Weld in 1996, Mr. Kerry would not be the Democrats' presumptive presidential nominee today. Mr. Weld, who won re-election as governor in 1994 with 71 percent of the vote, was a formidable opponent. In a novel arrangement, both candidates pledged to limit the use of their families' personal wealth to $500,000 for the general election.

Ever the master of nuance, Mr. Kerry claimed not to have violated the $500,000 agreement because the $1.7 million was a loan, not a contribution.

If I recall correctly from what I've read in another article .. they used their Boston home for the '96 loan .. just as they did to save Kerry's sorry butt in the primaries against Dean

Post-election finance reports revealed that he received a last-minute $1.7 million infusion from his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry,

Was this in addition to the mortgage he took out on "his" half of the Beacon Hill house (yes, he mortgaged it for the race against Weld, too!)?

Also .. didn't they buy that home together shortly before his '96 re-election run?

As I recall, she bought it for $1 million in the early 90s (?), poured $3 million into renovation, and then signed half over to him. I could be wrong (but I don't think so!)

As the principal financier of her husband's 1996 senatorial campaign, Mrs. Kerry long ago forfeited her claim of privacy. She should release her tax returns.

Absolutely correct!! Teresa better get accustyomed to the idea that those tax forms are going to be released eventually. After that, Kerry will REALLY find out what heat is all about because he hasn't begun to feel any heat yet; not like he will after Teresa's returns are made public.

The WT has Some Nerve daring to question the Kerry-Heinz's financial integrity,

Why, Kerry should call the Thought Police immediately.........the WT has just committed a (gulp) "hate crime."

Doesn't she currently have an extension until August? With some talk about applying for another extension?

My guess is that this is one of the reasons Teresa decided not to run for the Senate...all those enquiring minds digging up dirt. That was when she was a Republican, of course!

They're making a mistake by allowing this issue to percolate. Mary Beth Cahill knows better. I think this is a case of Teresa simply refusing to cooperate, and being willing to take her chances with the friendly media AND with the ads she can pay for with the money in question.

That's my understanding. However, I don't think she can get an extension past August. The extension is just for filing; she is supposed to pay her estimated taxes NLT April 15th whether she has filed or not.
