Republican lawmakers said yesterday that by walking out of their meeting Thursday with President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney early, some members of the September 11 commission did more damage to the panel's credibility.

"It's amazing to me that after the focus that the commission has put on that meeting, the insistence that every commissioner be allowed to attend, and that the president give whatever time the commission thought was necessary, that commissioners wouldn't stay," said House Majority Whip Roy Blunt, Missouri Republican.

Mr. Hamilton is president of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, which was hosting Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, who was making his only major policy speech in Washington at noon. Mr. Kerrey, the president of New School University, had a meeting scheduled with Sen. Pete V. Domenici, New Mexico Republican, to discuss an appropriation item.
So here are the items that caused the scheduling mis-match:

1. The President of the United States, as well as the Vice-President, answering questions regarding a foreign attack on American soil killing thousands of American citizens

2. A foreign policy speech by the Prime Minister of a country that has an army about the size and strength of a Little League Baseball team.

3. A single item of appropriation for a single University.

I think that congressional Republicans are missing an opportunity by merely criticizing Kerrey and Hamilton here.

They should be leveling them with scorn and sarcasm.

This is material that can make any Republican an instant Jay Leno. I mean really, just think how easily a Republican of any public stature could use the above list to truly make Kerrey and Hamilton objects of public ridicule, objects of public scorn, objects of public contempt.

And I just wish one single Republican would have the guts to say the truth:
The 9/11 Commission is a Circus

"The only thing that worries me is if people like myself take the bait from extremely partisan Republicans who are trying to taunt me into becoming a partisan Democrat," he said. "I'm capable of doing it, but I'm trying to resist."

Spare me the feigned indignation! This deserter should be hauled into the well of the House and forced to explain why he thought being a money whore for his school was more important than the most important meeting held by the 911 commission!

Kerrey should just admit that he and the rest of the Democrats in this dog and pony show aren't all that seriously interested in getting to the heart of the issue.

I accept Hamilton's excuse and my bet is that he probably apologized to all present. But Kerry's reason for leaving early strikes me as PPP (Pi$$ Poor Planning). He should have forwarned Sen. Domenici (R) that the meeting with the prez might run over. I'd like to hear from Domenici's office.

You express my view exactly. Kerrey, a seasoned politician, realized instantly the blistering assault about to land on him for walking out of the meeting. His response is a desperate attempt to cut off the criticism that will undoubtedly blacken his name for the rest of his life. I imagine this turd is sobbing in bed tonight as he contemplates the consequences of his action.

I understand that the commissioners' notes were taken for WH review as to whether they contained info detrimental to national defense. Any way to discover if Hamilton and Kerrey left their notes behind as they exited the Oval Office?

As far as honest men and women go, the credibility of the 9-11 "commission" could not be damaged more.

The "commission" has never had any credibility, so how can something never had be damaged?

The "commission" had two purpoeses:
1. Find a way to blame President Bush for the 9-11 attacks.

2. Exonerate bill clinton .

Well, Kerrey had to go have lunch with Sen. Dominici (Drudge said yesterday that he *thinks* Dominici and Kerry went out to eat lunch at that time).

Kerrey is certainly not serious about the 9/11 commission as anything but a partisan political tool, as indicated by his behavior on the Jon Stewart show, among other things. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1126046/posts

The man is disgusting.

At every turn, Kerrey gives himself away........he is, and has always been, a partisan hack.

I read a couple of lines on Drudge the other day, with no links, which said that each commission member was searched for weapons before being allowed in the Oval Office and all their notes were confiscated in order to make sure they contained no classified info, and would be returned to them after being checked.

Serves the SOBs right.

"This is a perception people have on the outside, especially those who don't like my political views."

I'd have been just as disgusted if pubbies had walked out of a similar meeting with clintbilly.

^^^

If they had had a cardiac arrest, they should have stayed for the entire meeting. /sarcasm

Politics is perception, and this commission will never overcome the message that two Dem commissioners walked out on the President.

They could have done nothing more calculated to destroy their credibility than this insult.

Yes, they had busy lives.
Yes, they had other appointments.
No, they were not indispensable at those other meetings.
