"I heard it reported today that Nick Berg couldn't find work in Iraq, didn't have $$ to return home and refused a flight offered him by the State Department."
I know, and also that he thought the drive to the airport would be more dangerous than traveling by himself to Kuwait by taxi. Something is wrong here. He is either the dumbest person to ever live or the reports are all BS.

Basically, the Salon guy/gal made these points:
1. Your list is longer than the list currently posted at the source site.
>> The insinuation is that you made up the extra names, or got them from some other source.
>> A better (and obvious) question is why the original source has been scrubbed. If Salon is interested in an interesting story, this would be a good place to start.
2. Your false list may have been read by someone in Iraq. Since it was labeled "enemies", that person used it to identify people they should be on the watch for.
>> The insinuation is that a thread on FR is so high profile that Iraqi police in Iraq used it to identify people to watch for.
>> Wow! Salon must really think FR is hot stuff!
>> Either that, or the Salon person thinks Iraqi police are morons. Hmmm...
3. The local police in Iraq were able to tell Nick Berg was related to the Berg on the list.
>> Wow again! The Salon guy/gal must think the Iraqi police database is really hot stuff!
>> Or, maybe the Salon guy/gal thinks the Iraqi police think all Bergs are the same? Or, maybe ANY Berg will do?
The Salon "reporter" has no logic whatsoever to back up his/her insinuations. Is this why Salon is a financial wreck? Or is this simply the way all liberals "think"?
There is, of course, another completely plausible explanation for all of this. Someone at Salon wanted to see how much bandwidth they could waste at FR, and how much of MY time they could waste at the same time! And it worked! Grrr.....

I don't read Saloon; in fact, if they said today was Wednesday, I'd check the calendar.

a video of his beheading --supposedly by a radical Islamic group
Guess this "reporter" missed the video. Didn't look like the IRA or Hunters or whale killers or NRA members or Republicans or SUV drivers or oil co. exec's.
Although she may be on to something here, I've seen PETA and EDF threaten such acts.

Some people on left-leaning blogs are floating the theory that Nick Berg was detained or singled out by U.S. authorities in Iraq because of the list you posted. Well, I guess every civilian wandering around over there with the name of Smith, Anderson, Murphy, Cooper, Taylor, Edwards, Moore, Miller, White, Wright, etc., was also detained for the same reason, as those names are on the list, too. </sarcasm>

Dear Friends and Customers of Nick Berg and Prometheus Towers,
I am enclosing the following news release which my wife and I are about to release to the media for you. If anyone out there in the broadcast industry can do anything to help us spread the word about our son's disappearance especially to the Mid East, we would be very appreciative:
On March 14 our son, Nick Berg, left for Iraq to inspect some radio towers that had been damaged during last years war. His goal was to secure some contract work
for his business, Prometheus Methods Tower Service. He planned to return on March 30 through Amman, Jordan.
On March 24, Nick was picked up by the Iraqi police in Mosul and held for questioning for no apparent reason. He was subsequently detained by the U.S. military and interrogated by the FBI until his release on April 6. No reason was ever given for holding him for these 13 days. Immediately upon his release he emailed the family and proceeded south to Baghdad where he was staying at the Al Fanar Hotel.
On April 9 he called us and said that he was seeking a safe route out of the country either through Jordan, or possibly Turkey. Most of the major routes were closed due to military action around Fallujah. Since that time we have had no contact with our son. No one we know in Iraq has seen or spoken to him, and we know that he has not accessed his email. We are extremely worried about his safety. We are asking anyone who has seen Nick or knows anything about his whereabouts to come forward and give us this information so that he can be safely brought home.
We extend our sympathies to all of the many families who are in the same situation.
Suzanne and Michael Berg

>>The big question for the reporter is this: which is easier to believe, that A.N.S.W.E.R. redacted their list, or that you were prescient enough [in] MARCH to post Berg's fathers name knowing it would endanger him in MAY.
There you have it. Apply Occam's Razor, and we're done.
These conspiracy theory Lefties need to take the advice here:

Beheaded Man's Firm Was On Right-Wing 'Enemies' List Breakfornews.com ^ | May 12, 2004 | Fintan Dunne Posted on 05/12/2004 12:59:00 PM PDT by Tarantulas Beheaded Man's Firm Was On Right-Wing 'Enemies' List The family firm of beheaded American Nick Berg, was named by a conservative website in a list of 'enemies' of the Iraq occupation. That could explain his arrest by Iraqi police --a detention which fatally delayed his planned return from Iraq and may have led directly to his death. The reporter believes Iraqi police regularly use FreeRepublic to determine who the official enemies of the United States are? I would like for the reporter to further explain the leap made in this paragraph.
Nick Berg, 26 disappeared into incommunicado detention after his arrest by Iraqi police in March, 2004. He vanished again after his release 13 days later. His body was found last Saturday in Baghdad, and a video of his beheading --supposedly supposedly? or is there an inference here that maybe it wasn't a radical Islamic group and might be members of the radical right wing? Does this reporter think we're part of the wacko militia groups and have sent some of our members over to kill sons of A.N.S.W.E.R. supporters? by a radical Islamic group-- was posted on the Internet on Tuesday.
The official story of his gruesome murder has many dubious aspects, not least the real reason why Iraqi police detained the young man at a checkpoint. I haven't heard a reason yet why he was detained in the first place. New research by BreakForNews has uncovered a plausible explanation.
The FreeRepublic.com web site and forum has a reputation for right-wing views, often fanatical fanatical? Oh, please! Republican and relentless pro-war activism.
On 7th March, 2004, just three weeks before the first anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, an 'enemies' list of anti-war groups and individuals was posted on the Free Republic forum.
It began: "Here you are, FReepers. Here is the enemy."
The list had been copied from publicly available endorsements of a call to action for an imminent anniversary antiwar protest on 20th March, 2004. The protest was being organized under the banner of the A.N.S.W.E.R Coalition (Act Now to Stop War & End Racism). If the reporter is going to stretch as far as they have to find a reason, why aren't they pointing fingers at A.N.S.W.E.R. since the list was already available there?
Among those listed as having endorsed the call to action was this entry: "Michael S. Berg, Teacher, Prometheus Methods Tower Service, Inc."
That's Nick Berg's father, Michael who acts as business manager for his son in their family radio communications firm, Prometheus Methods Tower Service. And the reporters point is?
I'm continuously amazed at the way some people's minds work. They can invent a tin-foil theory based upon you supposedly being able to see into the future and know Nick Berg was in Iraq! I'm sorry but I think this reporter is a nut.

The above "theory" demands a tin foil hat! If these "left-leaning blogs" want to be taken seriously, they should lean more on FACTS instead of some wild theory.

TOTAL BS. Doug was clairvoyant and knew that posting Bergs name would come in handy one year later. I think Doug has been scammed.

Hi Doug!
Dear Salon Reporter...
You asked Doug this question.
So I wonder if you can tell me where you got your list -- have you any idea why yours is longer than the one they have?
It's called research....Doug did a little digging......something you and your fellow members of the press need to do.

I'll bet that email came on the letterhead of a large law firm, too. You know the kind, with hundreds of high-powered partners and stuff. I can just tell from the professional business-like tone of the e-mail, that Mr. Yourworstememy, ESQ. probably should be taken seriously.
