Just under four months from today, Americans will be able to walk out of a gun store with an AK-47 rifle, an Uzi or other weapon of mass murder under their arm.
Unless Congress acts — and Republican leaders show no inclination to do so — the 10-year-old federal assault gun ban will expire Sept. 13. A word from President Bush would get a renewal before lawmakers, a majority of whom would probably approve it. But the president is silent.
Most people, including most gun owners, are properly alarmed. A survey released last month by the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center found that 71% of those surveyed and 64% of gun owners wanted Congress to extend the ban.
But congressional leaders, too accustomed to taking marching orders from the National Rifle Assn., have stymied the reauthorization bill that Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), John W. Warner (R-Va.) and Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) introduced last year.

Yeah, they probably conducted a "screening" poll first, then armed with the knowledge of how specific individuals would vote, could assemble the sample for the second, reported, poll. Either that, or they conducted the survey at the Several Sucker Stroll (Million Mom March).
Full auto MGs made before 1986, IIRC, could be bought in some states if you paid a tax, maybe $200.00, to the Feds. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Volkmer - McClure Act prohibited civilian purchases of new MGs after 1986.

Some states require state permission as well. The US Treasury Dept. lists only a few hundred thousand lawfully owned fully automatic weaponss. The bulk of these are owned and used in the motion picture industry."

I think that in these days of foreign murderers in our country...and our own violent drug gangs...
..and "because"...and like I always used a "bananna clip" on my bolt-action .22 at the range when I was but a tiny pup...and that those who have or can afford to buy...and it is a pain in the dew-claw to load only 10 in these pretty 30-rounders....to say nothing of the highly desirable facial expressions and feet-beating back down the trail from whence they came on our rural property when they behold that black chunk of steel protruding from a stainless mini-14..
...and did I mention "because" we are still "free" Americans, and blow off tons of fireworks every JULY 4th...not because they're only pretty...but to tell the WORLD something it certainly seems they have forgotten about FREE people...who didn't just have it painlessly handed to them by their "keepers"...

This is an issue that should give Kerry a lot of grief. He is a gun grabber from way back, and has an "F" rating from the NRA.
Actually, there was no one on the ballot but Big Jawn. A number of us VA FReepers conducted a mini write-in campaign for Ollie North. But didn't get too far with it.

I really think he will retire at the end of this term and not seek re-election in '08. There are a number of conservatives waiting for such an event: Congressmen Robert Goodlatte, Randy Forbes, and Eric Cantor for certain. But none of these three would challenge Big Jawn in a primary. Too scared.
When the cosmetically incorrect firearms ban expires, every shooting anywhere with a scary-looking gun will make the news; and buckets of tears will be shed about how Bush and the Republicans and the NRA have killed this promising young man, sweet baby, fabulous woman, etc. in cold blood.
Guess I'm a mass-murderer, then.
if that is true..why are are there 2000 gun laws on the books today??
we recently had a moron in the La. legislature try to pass a gun law that was seemingly harmless, but got smacked down bad...seems as though, as socialistic and domineering, the selected few are, they know the citizens of this state quite well.
They know we won't put up with this nonsense and will vote 'em out, burn 'em out or kill 'em out.

I wholeheartedly agree. Warner is worthless. I stopped calling his office because I got tired of debating his aides. "Whay's wrong with more gun control laws?" Serving on the armed services committe he should realize that arms control only works if both sides adhere to them. The only people these additional gun control laws effect are law-abiding citizens. Even his staff are a bunch of Rinos. At least we have one good Senator here in VA. Of course, before I moved here to VA my two senators were Kerry and Kennedy. So at least my glass is half full.
The editor of LA Times claims I'll be able to step right in and buy an UZI? Is that a promise?? Because I'll sure be lined up to buy one.
Now, would it be possible with a class action lawsuit against the LA times if their claim fails to come through?
The act prevented any new fully automatic weapons from being bought and sold in civilian hands if the weapon was first registered after 1986. If the weapon was first registered before 1986, it can still be legally bought, sold and possessed under federal law both now and in the future. (Of course, not all states allow these weapons, but that's another matter.)
So, in summary, I think that what you wrote about the law is correct.
This article is full of LIES. The only thing this law applies to is the 10 round magazine limit and the pistol grips and bayonet lugs. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FULL AUTOMATIC WEAPONS.
They won't be carrying them out of the gun stores in California!
It sure ain't gonna happen in California! We've got our own "AW ban". Very few "registered" their "AW's", so we're well armed for when the confiscation attempt comes. Of course, I don't know anybody who has one, and they fell in the lake on a hunting trip anyway!
