From a humanist and Christian point of view (mine), this is absolutely terrifying.

That's the problem, they 'sell' the screening first as a 'dont you want to know' - then when the mother has a deformity - 'well, are you sure you can handle it? we only want to help you make the 'right' choice.'
We said NO to screening. If we werent going to kill the baby, you DONT need to know. Screening (ie amneocentesis) is NOT medically helpful (if there is anything seriously deformed an ultrasound will show. Downs Syndrome is *not* a reason to kill a baby.
The right choice is life.

Ouch. The only good news is that this is a report from UK. Hopefully we can end 24+ week abortions (that's akin to infanticide) in the US soon and forever.

I never had an abortion and I had 5 perfect babies. My kids never had an abortion and I have 6 perfect grandchildren.
God really does know what He's doing.

Wouldn't surprise me if HMO's are in favor of this - they could save billions this way.
A little over a year ago .. my niece and her husband were suddenly told that the baby they were expecting had a very large head and they were concerned.
Even at this early stage, the doctors were recommending they abort the child.
Being Christians, they came to my house and we prayed. They had already decided they would trust God and they believed the baby was going to be okay.
Months later, the doctors were preparing to perform a cessarian, deliver the baby, rush the baby to a Children's hospital close by and perform an operation .. which consisted of a shunt to allow the fluid to drain from the child's brain .. which they concluded was continuing to enlarge.
However, while my niece was in the hospital to have the operation .. she went into labor. After one more quick check, the doctors decided to allow her to deliver normally. The baby was delivered. The doctors WERE SURPRISED the baby appeared normal. They ran tests. NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH HER. SHE JUST HAS A LARGE HEAD - NORMAL FOR THE MOTHER'S FAMILY. Today .. she appears normal in size for any 1 year old. She's an adorable, bright, happy little girl.
HOW MANY WELL-MEANING DOCTORS HAVE GIVEN BAD REPORTS TO PARENTS WHO ELECTED TO ABORT .. PERFECTLY NORMAL BABIES ..??

Think about this. The NHS (National Health Service) is "offering" this service to women. This is the same nationalized health care service that's on the verge of going bankrupt(like every government welfare scheme). Think about how expensive it is to provide life-long medical care for a child with a significant deformity. Is this ultimately a cost-cutting move dressed up as "compassion?"
