Toddler Weighs 55 Pounds At 15 Months
WKMG Orlando ^ | June 1, 2004

A 15-month-old child in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia weighs 55 pounds and is gaining nearly 5 pounds a month, according to a Local 6 News report.

Luka Meliksishvili has been rapidly gaining weight since his birth, according to his parents. He already carries the weight of a 6-year-old child, Local 6 News reported Monday night.

Luka's mother, Eka Meliksishvili, said doctors in Tbilisi have examined her son and advised her not to be too concerned. They said Luka may be able to shed his excess weight as he grows older.

Watch Local 6 News for more on the story.

Anyone know how to say "Atkins' Diet" in Georgian?

I don't think it's relevant. It sounds like the poor kid is suffering from one of the rare (and perhaps single-gene) genetic abnormalities that result in early--and massive--obesity. Some specialists might even be able to help him, if he has one of the known genetic abnormalities. If the gene is unknown, it at least might help shed light on one of the causes of the more usual types of overweight/obesity and related conditions that afflict the rest of us, and cause some of us to flee to Atkins and other pop diet gurus.

If I were you, I would say there is something you can do. Get yourself another doctor! There most definitely is something wrong with a 200lb. 11 year old who can't stop eating. What kind of doctor says there is "nothing" you can do about something like this? If it isn't something medical or physical (as in Prader-Willi Syndrome) then the problem is psychological, in which case some major behavior modification (in a controlled environment) can be done, if you're willing. I'm sure it would be extremely tough on your whole family (and probably expensive), but I think it's worth a try. Your daughter's life depends on it.

I simply don't believe that there is "nothing" that can be done for your daughter.

Thank you. No, she does not have the syndrome, but I will bet she has either hypothamic or absorbtion issues.

In this day of managed care and evidence-based treatment, there is no treatment modalities available for her. None of her lab values are out of wack. Her cortosol values have leveled off. There just isnt anything that I can do, we have been to dieticians, and eating disordered programs, where I am told that she is just obese.

I have thought of a surgeon, but it seems extreme for eleven, even though she has stretch marks on her arms and shoulders from rapid weight gain.

My little daughter is 10kg and 65cm at age 7 months...of course I think her growth slow down now for the last month. I am a big guy, I am 90.9 kg and 175cm...but until I turn 24 I was as tall but very light...then I begin to bulk up in muscle and still am, 8 years later. Do you think she is to big?

My SIX YEAR-OLD doesn't weigh anything close to 55 lbs. I wonder if this is genetic or bad judgement on the parents. I've seen more than a few very chunky children whose parents sole technique for soothing a cranky child was to feed them.

Mr. FourPeas mother took him to the doctor when he was just over a year old because his skin was stretched so tight she was afraid it would split. (Obviously this should tell you something about her relative intelligence and common sense.) When ever he'd cry, she'd give him a bottle. Come to think of it, her answer to everything is still to give him something to eat; usually it involves chocolate.

HOw cute is this kid?

Lucky he isn't living in the USA, the liberals would be trying to take him from his parents for letting him be fat!
