Distaso focuses on Laci's clothes

Defense questions accuracy of Modesto Police reports

By Jason Dearen, STAFF WRITER

REDWOOD CITY -- While prosecutors focused Thursday on "Mary Jane" shoes and the color of pants Laci Peterson wore on the day before her murder, the alleged killer's defense attorneys launched their assault on the Modesto Police Department's murder investigation. On the first full day of testimony in the double-murder trial, prosecutor Rick Distaso called six witnesses who either saw or had information about Laci's actions on the last day she was seen alive.

Witnesses testified that, on the day before her disappearance, Laci did some grocery shopping for Christmas dinner

at Trader Joe's, got a facial waxing at a day spa, and accompanied husband Scott Peterson to get his hair cut. .....

Geragos deconstructs prosecution's case against Peterson

Defense attorney: Fetus was born full-term therefore defendant's not responsible for murders

By Jason Dearen, STAFF WRITER

REDWOOD CITY -- Scott Peterson is a cad not a killer, his defense attorney said Wednesday as he began an assault on the very essence of the evidence against Peterson -- when his wife and child died.

In the scenario cast by attorney Mark Geragos, the child was born alive weeks after Christmas Eve 2002, the date prosecutors say his mother, Laci Peterson, had been killed.

"If this baby was born alive, clearly Scott Peterson had nothing to do with this murder," Geragos explained to the six men and six women of the jury. .......

Witness testifies that Laci was a 'rare pregnant woman'"

“She was a rare pregnant woman,” said Michelle Buer, whom Peterson saw regularly for day-spa treatments. “She was very happy through her whole pregnancy.”

Testimony from Buer and three others this morning sketched a picture of Laci Peterson going about holiday business and mildly pampering herself Dec. 23, 2002 - the day before she was reported missing, sparking a massive search........

REDWOOD CITY -- A maternity blouse similar to the one Laci Peterson was wearing hours before prosecutors believe she was murdered was found wadded up in a dresser drawer at her home, Peterson's sister testified Thursday.

But prosecutors failed to lay out the significance of that for jurors in a disjointed first full day of testimony that showcased "missed opportunities," one legal observer said. ......

Feb. 16: Laci Peterson: A Fateful 24 Hours

MODESTO, Calif. -- By all accounts, the Christmas holiday season was one of Laci Peterson's favorite times of the year. She enjoyed creating special desserts and had even taken cooking classes in France.

Her skills had earned her the nickname of 'cake lady' from several of those closest to her. Family and friends waited in anticipation to see what she would whip up for holiday gatherings........

Right. Presumably, Distaso is making a note of it, then, at the end of the trial, when there is no possibility of a witness changing his/her story at the behest of the defense, THEN it will be time for Distaso to tell the incident as he and the prosecution see it.

My guess is that it will be argued as: "Yes, there's the same shirt Amy saw Laci wearing, the last time Laci was reliably seen alive. It's there in this photo, hanging out of the Petersons' clothes hamper. Perhaps one of the last actions Laci did before she died was to put that shirt where you see it in the photo. But someone noticed it was there, and took a picture of it. And Scott realized that someone had seen that shirt there, so he took it and wadded it up and quickly stuck it in the drawer, out of sight. Why? Was he afraid that the presence of that shirt in the hamper might contradict his fabrication that Laci was wearing a white shirt the day he says someone else kidnapped her? Was he afraid that the presence of this shirt in dirty laundry would tell us that Laci really met her death at home--not out in the park or on the street somewhere?"

A man who's wife is "missing", I would think would have saw to it that the laundry was done and have his lovely wife's clothing clean and hanging in the closet when she returned home. That's a long time to let the dirty laundry go! It being wadded up and stuffed in the drawer is just another bizzare that Snott WOULD do along with all of his other behavior. Trying to sell her car, and the home with the furniture in it!

Look at an interesting item from someone at CTV boards who looked over Distaso's opening..

"Distaso said to pay attention regarding the corner of Scenic & Coffee. I'm assuming something will be presented later about this area - perhaps McKenzie was dropped off here. ?"

here is a link to map of the area..

I'm wondering it there may be (would be sweet)a witness to Snotty dropping McKenzie off????

My husband is a laundry freak. He does it all. However, if I was missing I don't think he would think to do it at all. Laundry would be the last thing on his mind. Remember Scotty was out putting up flyers and such. I don't find the fact that he let the laundry go bizarre at all given the fact that most men don't do the laundry.

I agree that he was "busy"(and he did quite a bit of golfing during that time), but were talking about 2 months here...and for the blouse to go from the hamper to wadded up and stuffed in a drawer is strange to me.

I think there will be some surprises...with the gag order and the threat of an attack on LE and the Prosecutors by the Defense team...I think the State has kept allot under hat to protect the integrity of the case...they have to...IMO, if this a mostly circumstantial case.

Agreed Jackie. I am convinced that the Prosecution has kept some "things" ABSOLUTELY QUIET. Rick Distaso was a former Military Prosecutor, he's a disciplined man.

This is what he said about Scenic & Coffee (Downey Park). He is in the midst of showing a 2001 aerial photo of the neighborhood.

...the park -- actually, this street corner right here, I think that's Scenic and Coffee. That won't mean anything to you, but it will come into perspective later. And then the whole park is five miles long. It goes all the way down here, it goes all the way downtown. And Scott Peterson -- Scott Peterson's home is right here. ...

Many thanks for the ping, rb! I look for this case to be a back and forth, back and forth in the media for months! Each day we'll get a report that says, "well, this was a good day for the prosecution"; the next day, we'll hear "what a good day for the defense". Maybe we should all just sleep through it.

I'm intrigued by this "bear" business.

Any connection to my wife's bear thing?

She says if there's anything to reincarnation, she wants to come back as a bear. Says, "they sleep all the way through the da@#ned winter and wake up skinny!".
