VH1 & MTV Glorify deviant & dangerous lifestyles
opinion | me

Posted on 06/04/2004 10:09:36 AM PDT by Rhettsgirl

Last week I was flipping through the channels and there on MTV was some show, "All about Gay" or "Everything Gay" or some crap like that.

Then last night hubby and I were flipping through the channels and on VH1 was a show called "The Secret Lifestyles of Swingers". We watched it for about 10 minutes wondering if the emphasis would be on the fact that this is a deviant and dangerous lifestyle.

It wasn't.

It was all about glorifying this lifestyle.

For the first time in ages, a TV show made me cry. I turned to my husband and said, "ya' know, it's no wonder my 17 yr. old sister thinks this crap is okay----she's part of the VH1/MTV generation and this is what they are being told and exposed to."

I'm no prude and certainly not stupid. I know what goes on in this world. I just don't agree with alot of it. And what folks choose to do IN THEIR BEDROOMS, IN PRIVATE does not concern me.

What does bother me is seeing it all over the place, even local channels.

Where does it end? Is there really anything that can be done about the lack of morality our children are subjected to on a daily basis?

The people who run MTV are going to start a homosexual cable channel soon.

It ends when they can no longer make a profit.

"Scarlett"...most cable systems will allow you to block the channels...do it once, and never again..

It's called pandering to one's basest instincts. MTV is not allowed in my house.

First of all I want to congratulate you on your ability to be grieved by some things. This is a quality all too rare among people these days. It has something to do with keeping your conscience sensitive. Secondly, things that are wrong now openly declare themselves with little fear of being challenged.

Talk to your cable provider and write letters to get a menu system for channel subscriptions - so that users can pick and choose exactly what channels they are going to pay for in their "package." The technology is in place that would allow this to happen and don't let anybody tell you it's not. The market can drive some of this garbage back into the sewers from whence it came. But viewers have to do their part.

It is impossible to make a lifestyle private. The privacy argument is just an argument of convenience. There is nothing private about it. Too late. SCOTUS has said this stuff is protected by our 200+ year-old constitution.

Ultimately, it does concern you what people do in private. I understand about not wanting to intrude on someone's intimacy and privacy. Yet the private character of individuals eventually leaks out into public view. Take for example the homosexuals. Some hoped they would be satisifed with not being persecuted but those who choose that path are not be content to keep their lives to themselves because their behavior is deviant. They will try to change everyone's viewpoint about life in a futile attempt to justify their choices and salve their reprobate minds. The pollution eventually reaches your yard and your children.

They are so smug and smarmy over at VH1. All of the people they feature in their programs are "know nothings" who think they know it all.

Another idea is to watch this crapola with your daughter and let her see your reaction to it. Even if you delete it from your tv menu at home, she will still no doubt have access to this junk at friends' homes.

Went through this with 2 daughters, and now a 12 year old grandson. When we watch a movie that has too many swear words, for example, I mention how boring, unfunny, unimaginatve, etc., it is to use the f word 30 time in 3 minutes' time.

We have no cable in our house. The big TV is hooked up to a VCR. We borrow casettes from the library. Cartoons. Star Wars. Power Rangers. Stuff like that.

We have a little (9 inch) TV for picking up broadcast TV.

Paying for cable is paying to have poison pumped into your living room, and your children.

No way.

For the most part, they (MTV) are counting on their European audience to keep the money rolling in on this project. Between Germany and the UK...there is enough of an audience to make it profitable, and they can wait out the US storm. There is no doubt that it will be around for years to come. My forecast...is that we see a bondage version of MTV by 2020. It doesn't take alot to make a profit on these type situtations and you can run the shows in various countries now with the different audidence options.

uvular, I agree 100% Watching it with them is the only way. Stuff may be boring as Hell and stupid, but participating in their viewing not only gives you togetherness, it also helps communicate and instill your values in them. You must teach them to think for themselves, and to acquire taste.
