Poll: Half of French feel no moral debt [for D-Day or their liberation]

PARIS - Fewer than 50 percent of French people think France has a moral debt to the United States 60 years after the Allied D-Day landings, according to an opinion poll published on Saturday.

The poll of 1,000 people on May 25 and 26 showed 48 percent of respondents thought France, which was liberated by U.S. and other Allied forces during World War Two, had a moral debt to the United States. Fifty percent thought it did not.

The poll was published by Le Parisien newspaper hours before U.S. President George W. Bush was due to arrive in France for the anniversary of the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. It also showed growing French criticism of the United States. Forty-four percent of people polled were critical of the United States, up from 36 percent in a similar poll in March 2003 and compared to 34 percent in October 2000.

How sad that I am not surprised. Thank you Frenchies for strengthening my resolve even more to never visit your country or ever buy any product made there. And don't come whining to us when the radical Muslims take over your country and suddenly you need someone with a little backbone to clean up the mess.

For Nazi Germany the occupation of France was the easiest to administer.

I have definitely crossed France off my list of countries I want to visit. I would like to visit Normandy but I would rather honor those who fought to liberate France in other ways-none that contribute to the French economy. I buy domestic wine since there are several vineyards in my area so I have no need for that French swill.

I am not surprised. I watched a show on the History Channel last year about this time about all the women who shacked up with the Germans and had children by them- and how after the war they were very shunned and embarrassed. That was a generation that had the dignity to be ashamed- today's generation would probably not feel the same way. Any country that wants France can probably have it! They won't even fight their own radical Muslims!

I agree. I won't even use L'oreal mascara- and it was my favorite!! The only reason I would visit France is one of two reasons: 1. to visit Normandy and 2. to drive down the streets of Paris with a giant American flag flying from the back of my automobile with the windows down screaming "Bite me you ungrateful cheese eating surrender monkeys!!"

And for the French, the surrender felt so good.

While driving, one third of Germans think of sex.
The other 2/3rds think of conquering France".

Just when I began to be outraged by this article, I remembered that 90% of the french (small f intentional) feel no moral debt when they "cook" their parents while on vacation.

Hell, they don't wear pants on the southern side of france.

Maybe we ought to just sort of show up unexpectedly at Normandy again. Storm the beaches, clear the Bocage, strike off across the countryside, racing for Paris- to liberate France from the French.

:-P

Gratitude has always been an ephemeral motivator. What keeps an alliance going is self-interest, not gratitude.

Why are the streets in Paris lined with trees?

Because Germans like to march in the shade!

And in related news, less than 2% of Americans feel aany moral obligation to France for helping us win the American Revolution.

I am, however, grateful to one Frenchman, the Marquis de Lafayette for spending his fortune and rissking his life (he was wounded at Brandywine) for helping this country in our formative years. He is a true hero, unlike his government which only became involved after it was clear we were going to win anyway. Lafayette most likely did not even consider himself a Frenchman as his last request was for dirt to be imported from America to bury him in.

I don't know where he got his info, but Bill O'rielly was saying that 53% of American high school kids don't even know who we fought in WW2.

Figures, what with 53% of 18-29 year olds in this country not knowing who we fought in WWII.

No wonder the media gets away with what it does.
