ATKINS IMPACT IN PASTA PLUNGE
New York Post ^ | 6/24/04 | PAUL THARP

American Italian Pasta is just the latest victim of the low-carb craze.

Doughnut giant Krispy Kreme blamed low-carb diets for disappointing first-quarter sales, but the explanation didn't stop angry shareholders from suing Krispy Kreme last week for failing to see the low-carb craze coming, among other issues.

Potato chip maker Jays Foods was pushed into bankruptcy court three months ago after the Atkins diet eroded sales by more than 10 percent, officials said.

More than 24 million American adults are following low-carb diets like those pioneered by the late Dr. Robert Atkins and his rival, Dr. Arthur Agatston, whose low-carb "South Beach Diet" book has sold more than 11 million copies.

Come on you stupid sheeple! Eat a big plate of spaghetti, with garlic bread - 2 or 3 slices! Atkins is dead.

I'll buy a low carb donut, if it tastes good:') I was looking for low carb spaghetti this week. All I found was Atkins. Reg was 69 cents. Low carb almost 5 dollars. Atkins needs some competition here (I did find low carb Ragu spag sauce though:')

Mold a bunch of pork rinds, sweeten it with Splenda and deep fry it. Krispy Kreme could probably figure out how to make that work pretty well.

Just use whole wheat pasta. Trader Joes has it.

Mueller's (the Italian American Pasta Co.) makes a half-carb pasta now. It's nicer than Trader Joe or any other whole wheat pasta I've tried.

Whole wheat pasta is ok in moderation... Check out http://www.soy7.com - this pasta's not bad...has some added soy protein, and a bit more fiber to temper the carbs of the pasta.

He was very healthy when he died though and it was an accident that called him home, right?

This has to be a joke. It just has to be.

If people are eating less pasta, donuts and potato chips, that leaves more for me:^)

The bottom line is that moderate-low carb modrate-high protein diet is what works best.

If I was a manufacturer of high carb foods, I wouldn't worry. Once people figure out how their body works over the long run, they will generally swing back to a middle ground.

The low carb thing is hard on the human system as a long term lifestyle-- look for lots of blood pressure problems to surface soon....

The funny thing about the low-carb "craze" COULD be that folks are discovering they used to eat just plain too much along with the junk they used to consume.

What? Potatoes chips once every 2 months instead of daily, or every week?!? Is this what we're complaining about? Eating one Krispy Kreme instead of a box full? Oh, the horror!

Plus some of the really excellent hand-rolled imported Italian pastas are frequently on sale at the grocery store now.

Krispy Kreme and potato chip maker Jays Foods deserve to suffer because they churn out junk food. Which is OK once in a while but.......

Just use whole wheat pasta. Trader Joes has it.

Are Americans too dumb to figure that whole natural grains are very fine carbs and not anywhere close to junk food carbs and white bread carbs.
