Battlements Found at Egypt's Ancient East Gateway

Wed Jun 30, 2004 01:52 PM ET

CAIRO, Egypt (Reuters) - An Egyptian archaeological team has uncovered battlements from Pharaonic times at the ancient eastern gateway to Egypt in the north of the Sinai Peninsula, the Culture Ministry said Wednesday. The find includes three fortifications built in the area of Tharu, an ancient city which stood on a branch of the Nile that has long since dried up, a ministry statement said.

The battlements stand on the ancient Horus Road, a vital commercial and military artery from ancient Egypt to Asia. The discoveries, about 20 miles east of the Suez Canal, form part of the defenses that stretched along the route.

Zahi Hawass, head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, said in the statement that the Horus Road was fortified through the ages starting from Egypt's Middle Kingdom beginning around 2000 BC until the Roman and Greek eras that start around 323 BC.

"The presence of three fortifications in one area, each built on the ruins of the other, confirms the strategic importance of the site, particularly of the city of Tharu as the entrance to the Nile Valley from the east," Hawass said.

Among the finds was a fort dating to the era of the Hyksos, a people believed to have invaded Egypt around the 17th century BC. The statement said the fort was probably destroyed in fighting when the Hyksos were expelled by Kamose and Ahmose in the 16th century BC.

Seti I, one of Egypt's great warrior pharaohs who reigned from about 1318 to 1304 BC, launched his campaigns along the Horus Road. His exploits are recorded in engravings in the Karnak temple complex in Luxor.

Another find was a set of battlements, including the southern wall of a fortified city dating from the 16th to 14th centuries BC. While the last find was a fort used from the Hyksos era to the Persian era that began around 525 BC.

Egypt Tourist Alert (May 25, 2004)

Tourist should be aware that a new law Number 89/2004 launched by the Egyptian Government on May 22nd, 2004 and effective immediately, increase the sales tax for hotels from five to ten percent. Obviously this will result in a five percent increase in most hotel rooms.

PING

This is a "Gods, Graves, Glyphs" -- Archeology/Ancient Cultures/Artifacts/Antiquities, etc. PING list.

Farmfriend who kept the GGG left FR and we don't have her ping list.

I am trying to re-create/create a ping list for the above topic.

I assembled this list by going through some related threads, and you either posted on them, or someone pinged you to them, so I am assuming there is some interest.

I apologize to those who don't want to be on this list.

PLEASE FREEPMAIL ME, if you want on or off this list.

If you want off, I will take your name off immediately and won't bother you any more.

Hopefully in a few days those who want off, will get off and we'll only have those who really do want to be on it.

I just had to start somewhere.

That's the point -- I am NOT using farmfriend's ping list. She left without passing her ping list to anyone, as far as I know.

If anyone has her list, please FReepmail it to me.

I am merely trying to reassemble the list from scratch, by looking through related threads.

This inevitably means, that some who want on the list aren't there and some who don't want to be, may be.

Hopefully we get it sorted it out.

Everyone, just please let me know whether you want on or off the GGG archeology, etc PING list.

I always get amused at Dr Hawass. He's a publicity hound. LOL But that's good. He's done more for Egyptian archaeology than anybody, in my opinion.

Avaris
by Immanuel Velikovsky
The identification of Avaris with el-Arish is detailed in Ages in Chaos, Vol. I, Ch. 2.

A plan to survey and dig on the site met an opposition on the part of Dr. Aviram, director of Antiquities in Israel.

It is quite probable that the Hyksos (Amalekites) hid their gold in the ground before the surrender. Therefore excavation may bring out important findings.

The river bed (of Wadi el-Arish) was the scene of fighting between the besieged and the Israelites under Saul in alliance with Kamose and Ahmose, the Egyptians.

The identification of Avaris with el-Arish goes together with the identification of the Hyksos with the Amalekites.
Zahi Hawass loooooves finding gold. Regardless, MANY THANKS for posting this!

Egypt Tourist Alert (Jan 21, 2009 BC)

Tourists should be aware that a new law Number 00/2009 launched by the Egyptian Government on Jan 21, 1600 BC and effective immediately, increases the sales tax for sheep and camel from five to ten percent due to recent damage to the toll booth (er, fort) on the Horas Highway. Obviously this is is only a temporary measure, and will result in a five percent increase for at most only 10 years.
