ABC News: Kerry May Have Already Picked Gephardt
ABC's The Note ^ | July 4, 2004 | ABC News Political Unit

Over the last few weeks, Sen. Kerry has had many more face-to-face meetings with potential picks than the press has reported.

One such meeting, several well-informed sources say, took place last Thursday night.

Kerry was in his home in Georgetown, and at around 10:30 pm, the last reporter staking him out -- someone from ABC News -- appeared to leave for the night.

Our sources say that Kerry and his Secret Service agents then went the very short distance to the nearby home of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Albright is a supporter of Kerry and has her office now in the same office building in Washington as the Kerry campaign.

At Albright's house late Thursday night, Kerry had a meeting with just a small group of people -- one of whom, our sources say, seemed to be the person Kerry at that moment planned to pick as his running mate.

Although Kerry said as recently as yesterday that he has not made a decision, our sources believe that this meeting might have served as the final face-to-face session the future running mates will have before announcement day, which could be as soon as this Tuesday.

Of the three potential picks whose advisers have confirmed have handed over reams of background information and believe themselves to be still in the running, there's only one we think was in DC that night -- Dick Gephardt. Tom Vilsack's staff says he was in Iowa and John Edwards, like many great Americans, was at Disney World with his family.

Other options -- Senator Joseph Biden, former Defense Secretary Bill Cohen, well, we are still checking to pin down where they were on Thursday night.

Of course, Senator Kerry could have changed whatever decision he might have made since last Thursday, and it is possible he has sent mixed signals (purposefully or not) to his advisers.

The Kerry campaign had no comment on this.

former Defense Secretary Bill Cohen

That would make it the perfect "Sticks and Stones" ticket. Could there be 2 more boring guys?

Edwards taking his family to DisneyWorld suggests that he could be the one. After all, knowing that your life could change forever, why not take the opportunity for one last vacation in a public place without being surrounded by Secret Service agents all the time?

I doubt it will be Gephardt. Gephardt is a tired face in the Democratic Party who brings nothing to the ticket. His lackluster presidential campaign last year generated no excitement at all. About the only thing he could do for Kerry is keep Missouri in play and that's not much. Gephardt is a throwback and would do for Kerry what Jack Kemp did for Bob Dole - absolutely nothing.

As for Hillary, are you kidding? That would be a gift from God because Hillary would make Kerry toxic and unelectable in at least 40 states. We'd be talking margins (for Bush) of 50+ points in many Southern and Western states. A Kerry/Hillary ticket would result in a Bush landslide of epic proportions. That is why it would never happen in real life (though I do daydream about the possibility).

She probably does NOT look in the mirror. If she did she would have suicided out long ago.

Regardless of WHO Kerry picks for a running mate, this one thing remains constant ---

Amendment XIV Section 3...No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer to any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. The Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

The then powers that be let Jane Fonda get away with giving aid and comfort to the enemy - are we to do it again? NO Send Amendment XIV - Section 3. to all you know especially your Congressmen. Do this for America and our Constitution. John F. Kerry is not fit to lead this country, perhaps Hanoi, but not AMERICA!

Put heat on Congress to obey the Constitution - remove Kerry from the campaign for presidency! Kerry was then and is now in direct violation of the United States Constitution, an instrument Democrats ignore 95% of the time. We are Americans - be an American and let your elected hear from you tomorrow! The 14th Amendment was written for men/women just like Kerry and Jane Fonda. The enemy within is running an illegal campaign.

Kerry's been polling daily, plus begging Clintons and flunkies for advice and counsel. So far, nobody's managed to give him the best advice which is to stop the incessant lies and 'nuances'. The long delay in choosing a vp is a ploy to hype interest in his flagging campaign. When they lose, as they will, Kerry will blame the vp candidate. TerAYsa will foam at the mouth and threaten to move out of the country. We should volunteer to help her pack.

Or is Kerry engaged in misdirection?

Methinks so. My money's on Edwards.

I'm sensing a swerve. Could be none of the above. Maybe they're throwing out a couple of leads to get the media going then pull a fast one to get everyone talking when Kerry picks someone no one has really talked about yet. If I had to guess, I'd say Vilsack.

This just in:

In yet another moment of indecision, John Kerry announced that he has chosen Dick Gephardt AND John Edwards AND Joseph Biden as his running mate.
