No Joy in Our Lives
Peterson's Parents Speak Out on Son's Murder Trial
July 9, 2004 A year and a half ago Lee and Jackie Peterson were eagerly awaiting the birth of their grandson. Today, they say, there is no joy in their lives.
Watch Barbara Walters' full report tonight on 20/20 at 10 p.m.
Their son Scott is on trial, accused of the savage murder of his wife, Laci, and their unborn son, a baby they planned to name Conner.
Lee and Jackie Peterson tell 20/20's Barbara Walters they are convinced of their son's innocence. But as the case unfolds in a Redwood City, Calif., courthouse, the Petersons must reconcile two versions of their son: one, a wrongly accused husband who grieves for his murdered wife and unborn son, and the other, an adulterer turned cold-blooded monster. ........

Peterson Trial Enters 7th Week
Jurors in Scott Peterson's double-murder trial have had more time outside the courtroom than in it recently to mull the prosecution's claims that the former fertilizer salesman killed his pregnant wife.

Heather's Trial Notes
The case resumes today following a four-day weekend -- the beginning of its seventh week, one that could see the most-anticipated witness called to the stand.
Prosecutors are still making their case that Peterson killed his wife in their Modesto home on or around Dec. 24, 2002, trucked the body to San Francisco Bay in a large tool box and plunged it overboard from a small boat.
His alleged motive: an affair with massage therapist Amber Frey.
Frey, who began cooperating with authorities soon after Laci Peterson was reported missing, could testify this week. Though a judge has imposed a gag order, preventing attorneys from discussing who will be called, court officials recently advised media about special procedures for when Frey testifies. .........

Scott Peterson's girlfriend called a Fresno police homicide detective's home in the days before and after Peterson's wife disappeared, partial cell phone records show.
Detective Richard Byrd's name surfaced in Peterson's double-murder trial during questioning about when Amber Frey called Modesto police about her relationship with Peterson and her whereabouts the day that Laci Peterson was reported missing.
Frey placed an almost hourlong call to Byrd's home the night of Dec. 21, 2002 -- three days before Peterson was reported missing, according to the phone records.
The next two calls from Frey's cell phone were to Scott Peterson the next morning, the documents show.
Frey called Byrd's home at least three times, for a total of 84 minutes, from Dec. 21, 2002, to Jan. 2, 2003, the records show. A 26-minute call from Frey's cell phone to Byrd's home took place the evening of Jan. 1, 2003 -- two days after Frey reportedly became aware that Peterson was married and his wife was missing.
Byrd declined to comment on the phone records, Frey's calls or the nature of their relationship.........

THE PETERSON TRIAL
Prosecution faulted by observers in court
Defense seems to be scoring points during D.A.'s time

Is Scott Peterson's defense team that good? Or are the prosecutors just not up to snuff?
That's what veteran trial lawyers are mulling over as they watch prosecutors try to convince a jury in Redwood City that Peterson is guilty of double murder.
After all, legal experts say, this is the prosecution's chance to bring out its most incriminating evidence, to build a rock-solid case against the Modesto fertilizer salesman who is accused of the 2002 slaying of his wife, Laci, and their unborn son.
But after five weeks of testimony, Mark Geragos, Peterson's noted defense attorney, instead seems be scoring one point after another, experts say.
During intense cross-examinations, Geragos has been able to produce evidence supporting his version of the facts, hammer away at the credibility of prosecution witnesses and even assume control of the courtroom, according to lawyers who have been observing the trial from the gallery of the Redwood City courtroom.......

Double act: Experts believe Senator John Edwards, right, brings real strengths to John Kerrys Democratic ticket. He is an attractive figure who may help Kerry appeal to centrist voters in the presidential quest.

Dream team ready for Bush
ALEX MASSIE IN WASHINGTON
BATTLE is now officially joined. John Kerrys selection of John Edwards as his running mate completes the rival tickets for this years presidential election and allows the campaign to start in full-blooded earnest.
Already Kerrys choice is reaping rewards. Edwards, whose sunny, optimistic populism appealed to independent and moderate voters during the primary season, fills in some of the blanks in Kerrys political curriculum vitae.
Where Kerry is a son of privilege, Edwards is self-made and his southern charm neatly balances Kerrys New England and mildly aristocratic appearance while also giving the ticket a geographic spread that makes it seem as though it is appealing to all America.
On the stump, too, it is merely a small exaggeration to argue that in terms of eloquence Edwards is to Kerry as Tony Blair is to George W Bush.
An initial, post-announcement, CBS poll gave Kerry a four-point boost but that may only be the beginning of the good news for the Democrat challenger.
Perhaps in an effort to shake voters out of complacency, Bushs own campaign strategists said they expect Kerry to have a 15-point lead by the end of the month, boosted as he will be by the acres of publicity Edwards has brought and, more importantly, by the partys convention...........

I heard Dean Johnson (former San Mateo Prosecutor) say this morning that he thought Geragos had better settle on A theory pretty soon. He said all these theories are even beginning to make some of the Jurors roll their eyes!! He said Geragos is just throwing stuff out there to see if any of it sticks. Really, he'd better get a solid theory soon since this was the guy who was "setting the bar so high that HE would prove WHO killed Laci Peterson". He's becoming a joke.

(KCBS) - The prosecution in the Scott Peterson double murder trial showed a 45 minute video tape to the jury this morning, as the prosecution tried to illustrate that Laci's murderer knew her and the couple's dog.
KCBS reporter Bob Melrose at the courthouse in Redwood City says the tape showed the outside of the Peterson home two days after Laci Peterson disappeared.
It showed there was no forced entry. Jurors could also hear the Peterson's Golden Retriever barking loudly as a Modesto Police Officer taped the outside of the home.
The prosecution was attempting to show that Laci was killed in the home, and whoever killed her did not need to break in and knew the dog.
Neighbors have told police they heard nothing unusual on the night police believe Laci was murdered.
Earlier this morning, Modesto Sgt. Rick Armendariz continued his testimony from last week, telling the court that the several searches he participated in last year on the San Francisco Bay turned up nothing of value.
Several searches for evidence were condcuted after the bodies of Laci and Conner were found along the Richmond shoreline and Scott Peterson was arrested in connection with the murders.
The trial was suspended on Thursday, so that defense ......
small drops of blood on the comforter??? Oh Please God let it be Laci's!!
Geragos:"Blood can't be dated, it is Laci's bed and she could have cut her legs shaving or gotten cut in the kitchen"
I hate to say it, but my husband always seems to have small cuts that bleed at night. It drives me crazy.
I would have to suggest that there would be a difference between blood splatter and drops from a shaving cut.
Maybe we should list and evaluate his theories, and then send it to him. Let's take a vote:
All those who say drug/alcohol addict Kim McGregor took break from watching soaps and killed her, raise hand.
All those who say drug/alcohol addict from warehouse mailbox pilfering killed her (but didn't take the money in her purse), raise hand.
All those who say drug/alcohol addict who allegedly pawned Croton watch killed her (but didn't touch the valuable and eminently pawnable jewelry on her), raise hand.
All those who say 110-lb. massage therapist who had never heard of Laci killed her, raise hand.
All those who say homeless men from shelter stopped in on way to park and killed her, raise hand.
All those who say Hawaiians killed her because of genetic tendencies of darker-skinned people to engage in crime, raise hand.
All those who say swarthy yard-workers took break from blowing customer's leaves into customer's neighbor's yard, and killed her, raise hand.
All those who say satanists from Albany Bulb killed her so they could have material for new artwork, raise hand.
All those who say Medina burglars were so uninterested in Medinas' $50,000 worth of jewelry that they went across street looking for excitement, and killed her, raise hand.
All those who say McKenzie killed her, then drove her to the Bay and dumped her, because he was mad at her for not playing fetch with him that day, raise hand.
wonder if the blodd was in a small area or spattered over comforter???
But they can analyze it for hormones! I heard they can tell what level of pregnancy hormone was in the blood. That's pretty darn close to being able to date it!
oops blood
oops blood
I'm just suggesting how Geragos would respond...You know he will question...
The officer just said blood drops..We'll have to wait for testimony concerning whose blood and what it seemed to indicate from an expert.
Really? He might need to see the doctor!
I've never heard of that! My husband snores at night, but doesn't bleed!
UH HUH and of course we know that Laci would have just "left it there" don't we Meg? I can't quite see her shaving her own legs at that stage of pregnancy anyway. I sure couldn't get over my belly to shave my legs.
Gawd I wish this trial were on TV.....I was so looking forward to being a couch potato for 6 months....lol
You've got a point.
Omigosh.... someone may have to call a.....(dum-te-dum-dum Dragnet music)... blood spatter expert, and we know what that means!
no no please no...can't bear to watch him spit ketchup again after the Michael Peterson....oops we won't get to see
Yes we could! We could see an artist's rendering of it!
If the artist could hold his hand steady enough to draw, while laughing uproariously....
BLUH SPATTR ALERT!!!
you know this phone call amber made dec 21st yo homicide detective could have the elements on the OMG OMG OMG gloria alfrd has referred to...Maybe snott talks in his sleep
