Leftists Demonstration Plans - DNC/RNC Conventions, Houston, TX. (Barf and Heads-Up Alerts)
Leftists E-Mail Announcement | 12 July 2004 | E-Mail

Looks like the local socialists are planning protests during both the Democrat and Republican national conventions in the Houston area. E-mail is unedited except for some contact data. Updates later.
--------------------------------------------------
Dear Sisters and Brothers,

During the last several months, an unfortunate political trend has been developing among some Left and progressive forces in our country. With the November 2004 Presidential election on the horizon, some activists have stopped protesting and begun putting their energies into electoral efforts to oust Bush from the White House. Bush is an especially vile and dangerous President. But if people in the U.S. want to promote peace, justice, and social change, we will have to do a lot more than kick him out of office.

All democratic-minded people in the U.S. condemn the Bush Administration's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; its crimes against the peoples of Palestine, Venezuela, Haiti, and other countries; its support for corporate-led globalization; its reactionary assault on workers, immigrants, communities of color, women, gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered people; its attack on basic democratic rights; its wanton destruction of the natural environment, and much more.

However, like a growing number of people in the U.S., we also reject Kerry and the Democratic Party as an alternative. Kerry and many other DP politicians support the occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq. They support the Israeli occupation of Palestine, U.S. aggression against Venezuela, Haiti, and other countries. They support the USA PATRIOT Act, albeit with some modifications. They enthusiastically endorse corporate-led globalization. And they do not support reforms which would significantly change the relations of power in our society.

Even if Kerry and the Democratic Party politicians are "the lesser of evils" in November, they are still pretty awful. Casting a ballot for them will not bring U.S. troops home from one hundred and thirty countries around the world, free Afghanistan or Iraq, or end Zionist colonialism. Casting a ballot for them will not produce a living wage for workers, halt the Walmartization of our economy, or end the attacks on immigrants and communities of color.

Only a mass movement of workers and oppressed people can achieve these goals. And such a movement should denounce Kerry and the Democratic Party as forcefully as it does Bush and the Republican Party. Independent working class political action is a vital prerequisite for achieving these goals and for building the kind of movement which can eventually abolish capitalism and build the foundations of a new socialist society.

As you may know, major national protests have been called for the Republican and Democratic National Conventions this summer.

When the Republican Party meets in New York City, beginning August 29, more than one-half million people are expected to participate in demonstrations against the Bush Administration and its support for war, repression, racism, and exploitation.

When the Democratic Party meets in Boston, beginning July 25, thousands of people will protest against the Kerry candidacy and the DP leadership's support for much of Bush's right-wing agenda.

In conjunction with this summer's national protests, the Progressive Workers Organizing Committee will sponsor demonstrations here in Houston. We believe it is important for local activists to help develop a larger, more powerful people's movement here in Texas. These demonstrations are endorsed by Socialist Labor Party Houston, International Socialist Organization, Deconstruction Crew, and Greater Houston Chapter Peace Action (list in formation).

The protest against Kerry, the Democratic Party, and capitalism will be held on Sunday, July 25, at 2 pm, in front of the Harris County Democratic Party headquarters, 1445 North Loop West.

The protest against Bush, the Republican Party, and capitalism will be held on Sunday, August 29, at 2 pm, in front of the Harris County Republican Party headquarters, 3311 Richmond.

We invite you to join us in demanding an end to war, repression, racism, exploitation, and the capitalist social system which produces them. Please contact us if you would like to endorse these demonstrations, or if you would like more information. And please visit our new website when you have the chance. The URL is ... deleted ...

In Solidarity,
David and Rona

I wish for these people a taste of what true poverty and oppression is. They have no idea. Let them live in China, Algeria, Zimbabwe, or Syria.

These people live in the most prosperous and free country in the world, yet they complain about poverty and oppression.

I'd like to ask the Communist Party USA, what is your plan for those of us who won't agree to go along with your socialist vision of the future? I'm a bit concerned because I've seen what happened to those who have opposed it before.

Brief Report From the "DNC Protest"

-------------------------------------------- I went to the socialists' protest at DNC headquarters today for observation purposes only between 2:00pm - 2:30pm. About fifteen people showed up. While the e-mails stated they were going to protest policies of the democratic party, I didn't see any signs that criticized the DNC. The signs were primarily "anti-Israel", "anti-war", "anti-capitalist", and "anti-colonization". I did notice one sign that mentioned a radical left-wing minor party (don't recall the party name, but it wasn't the Green party). The crowd was larger than I anticipated (expected 10 or less). I didn't notice any of the typical "anti-Bush" or "anti-GOP" signs, but since the democrats were not mentioned by name on the protest materials, looks like a half-hearted attempt to actually protest democrats. When they protest the local RNC office ahead of their national convention, I anticipate a larger group. I haven't seen anything in the Houston Chronical as of 8:30 pm this evening.
