LIVE THREAD: Hardball's 12 Missed Chances That Could Have Prevented 9/11
MSNBC ^ | July 21, 2004 | Chris Matthews/Lisa Myers

Posted on 07/21/2004 4:51:15 PM PDT by Howlin

On Sept. 11, 2001 — it all seemed so sudden, and without warning. But three years and two investigations later, it's clear there was a tragic trail of missed opportunities to stop some of the hijackers, disrupt the plot and perhaps save 3,000 lives.

*****Here are 9 of the topics for tonight's show: (See link for the complete conclusions, please.)***

The Malaysia meeting
January 2000: Top al-Qaida operatives converge on Kuala Lampur for a planning meeting that that includes two of the 9/11 hijackers

The calls
Once in the U.S., one of the hijackers gets up to a dozen calls from a known al-Qaida switchboard in Yemen.

The walk-in
April 2000: Niaz Khan, who says he was trained by al-Qaida, walks into an FBI office with an incredible tale.

The sighting
In the fall of 2000, a predator spy drone captures extraordinary live pictures of al-Qaida training camps in Afghanistan — including a tall man in flowing white robes believed to be Osama bin Laden.

The Phoenix memo
A prophetic memo in July 2001 by a Phoenix FBI agent warns bin Laden may be training pilots at American flight schools.

The Moussaoui arrest
Suspected terrorist Zacharias Moussaoui is arrested while training at a Minnesota flight school.

The search
In late August 2001, the CIA finally tells the FBI that two hijackers may be in the country, but the FBI can’t find them — even though they're listed in the San Diego phone book.

The watch list
The two hijackers are added to the watch list, but never put on the Federal Aviation Administration’s "no fly" list...

Air defenses
Sept. 11, 2001, 8:24 a.m. ET: A hijacker, believed to be Mohammed Atta, thinks he's talking only to passengers when he says — "We have some planes. Just stay quiet and you'll be OK.  We are returning to the airport."

Lisa Myers is going to be on the show? Wasn't she the one who interviewed Juannita Broaddrick? I guess that subject won't rear it's ugly head.

Anyhow, I wonder how much emphasis will be on Clinton's opportunities to grab Osama.

Surprisingly, Chrissy actually played some Hardball with Berger's ex-Chief of Staff earlier tonight.

Matthews scoffed at her notion that it was as a result of Berger's intense focus on the info he was attempting to digest in that secure reading room that caused him to "accidentally" walk off with highly classified docs stuffed into his pants.

According to reports from Stephen Hayes of the Weekly Standard, I think this is the meeting which was also attended by a high-up official in Saddam's intelligence agency.

I agree...... I just wrote this on another thread.

By the way, Chris Matthews (surprisingly) just GRILLED a female assistant to Sandy Berger. He almost had this girl in tears.

Apparently, Berger is claiming credit for finding the Millenium bomber. Of course, Richard Clarke has claimed that role as well.

Perhaps they will get into a public fight.

I'm not surprised. Chrissy is as much a scandal monger as anybody. This is his chance to show his credibility by being a tough, "hardball" journalist. It's easy to pile on when something like this happens, so of course Chrissy is right there.

I'm surprised that there isn't wads of cash sticking out of his pants and socks...

Gergen has been bought.

Where is the Gorelick wall?

This thing is already liberal biased. It's like their stupid polls that have answers that no matter how you choose, it comes out with the lying, liberal slant. It's like their stupid outcome-based education. Outomce-based media events. SCREW THEM.

I think Condi Rice pretty much knocked down that claim in her testimony before the 9-11 Commission.

Gergen has lost all credibility!

I just watched him on Chris Matthews.
The Fact that Berger violated federal law by taking copies of National Security documents that were related to an ongoing investigation seems to be lost on Gergen.

He kept trying to play it as a non issue because they were just copies. Gergen was a Clinton advisor...he knows the laws regarding classified documents. He knows that if Berger had taken a piece of toilet paper with writing out of that secured area....it would be a violation.

Then he jumped on what will be the dems next catch phrase for this....."we don't know what all happened yet"...
Unfortunately for Berger, Gergen, and the rest of their pals....Berger and his atty have admitted to Berger removing the documents.
And he did this several times. Yet Gergen was shameless enough to try and cover Berger's tail and play this as nothing.
Gergen look desparate to cover for his pal. Almost makes one wonder what Gergen Knew and When did he know it...
