Sandy Berger's classified wardrobe

By James Lileks

Sandy Berger, Clinton-era national security adviser and "informal" adviser on the same to Sen. John Kerry, is under investigation for cramming his khakis with classified memos and taking them out of the National Archives. Hey, it's happened to us all. You have an orange for lunch, your hands get sticky. Things happen, and besides, none of the memos could possibly have cast the Clinton team in a bad light, of course.

But let's play everyone's favorite game, "What If He Was a Republican?" Imagine Dick Cheney caught filling his socks with documents on pre-Sept. 11 security procedures. Imagine a hidden camera snapping shots of Condi Rice slipping secret memos into her foundation garments. We wouldn't be hearing about impeachment, we'd be debating the probity of rolling a guillotine toward the White House, and whether the heads should be arranged alphabetically on the fence spikes, or by seniority.

So what do we do with a guy who not only treats his trousers as a diplomatic pouch but was national security adviser during the years when al-Qaida feasted on American laziness?

Cue predictable response: "It's not like Berger lied and we went to war and people died for nothing and we're not safer and what about Iran? Huh?" Subject changed, mission accomplished.

But. Back up. After Sept. 11, you might recall, the country didn't blame President Clinton for inaction, or for insufficiently pasting al-Qaida. The general consensus gave him a pass, because everyone was too busy having fun in the '90s to care much about the hairy, scary nut cases who wanted us dead. People gave the Clinton team a pass. The clock was reset at ground zero, and we thought we'd move forward from there. But that was before the "BUSH KNEW" headlines. Before the Sept. 11 commission's elevation of Dick Clarke and others who sought to blame Bush, not Clinton. It became political again.

Fine. That's how they want it, that's how it'll go. So, Sen. Kerry: Did your "informal" adviser tell you what was in the memos? Did he tell you he'd taken them? Did you know about the investigation before it was leaked, and did you keep Berger on as an "informal" adviser anyway?

What did you know, and when did you know it?

Ah, the magic invocation, the recipe for Washington's favorite dish: piping hot scandal. Expect Bergergate splashed all over your front page, making headlines for weeks to come! Providing you live in an alternate dimension, of course, a place where the press isn't actively pulling for Kerry, that is.

Here on Earth? A non-story by August. It's not important.

C'mon, 'fess up: Wouldn't you rather look at John Edwards' hair for four years than Dick Cheney's? All right, then.

I guess someone hasn't heard that it has been proven that our President did not lie.

Compare this article to the one posted 3 minutes earlier from the Dayton News. Hmmmm--- Which one is liberal and which is conservative??? At least this paper gets it. My only disagreement is how long Berger's theft stays in the headlines. It's being shoved under the rug now. If any of the alphabet news talked about it last night, I missed it. Fox was the only one that mentioned it that I heard.

Over 900 FBI files were gone and then suddenly found two years later on a coffee table in the West Wing of the White House during Clinton's presidency. That wasn't even included in Clinton's Senate trial. Yet Charles Colson, during Watergate, went to prison for one FBI file which he didn't harm that person with.

Republicans should either learn to street-fight like the Dems or just keep taking it without resistance. Good manners are useless when faced with thugs.

"Good manners are useless when faced with thugs."

Absolutely agree! This reminds me of the time our car was stolen. My husband came home before the thief could get away, and he caught the guy. I didn't see the nab, but I caught flack about my husband using force to stop him. I told the man, who was complaining, I didn't think the thief would stop by saying, "Please". There were others standing around at the time, and they got a kick out of my answer. I was angry that my husband was criticized, and just said what came first to mind.

In this case it isn't the Republicans that are making this a non-story. It's CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, NYT etc. Lileks point is dead on. If Berger were a Republican, we wouldn't even be warmed up yet. This would be front page news through election day.

"If any of the alphabet news talked about it last night, I missed it."

I don't know either, but I've been taking time to periodically go to the alphabet news sites and do searches of their indiviual sites for terms such as: Berger, Berger thief, Berger archives, etc. This way, they will know that there is public interest in this story. I suggest that others do some searches.

This is a good suggestion; I hadn't thought about doing that. It would be more accurate than what I'm doing, and I wouldn't have to listen to Dan Blather. What I did hear of CBS last night was blatantly anti-Bush, it was astonishing.

Understand, and often agree with your sentiment, however Republicans have the presidency and majorities in both houses of Congress, not to mention the governorships. That says something positive about good mannners.

Excellent piece.

Lawrence O'Donnell brought up an excellent point yesterday on Scarborough. He said that, contrary to what Dan Rather insinuated regarding the timing of the leak. O'Donnell clearly stated, quite to the contrary and correctly, that the "leak" had to have come from the Kerry campaign. Because it would be politically smarter to deal with the issue now then in October.

Nice to know that someone of those talking heads actually knows a little about politics!!!

BTW, I wonder how many months have gone by before Sandy Burglar informed Kerry that he, Burglar was under a federal investigation??? hmmmmmm

And I wonder who put Burglar up to the "dox in the sox" job? Klintoon or Ketchup?

For someone who received a JD from Harvard, Sandy Burglar is dumb as a post!!!

[Kerry Advisor] Berger's contempt for US national security [annotated]

Scott Jordan
BrookesNews.Com
Monday 26 July 2004

"[Lindsey's] nicknames have run the gamut from "the Enforcer" to "the Consigliere," the Sicilian word for a trusted counsel to a Mafia chieftain." -- Time Magazine, March 23 19981

he astonishing admission of Samuel "Sandy" Berger, Bill Clinton's longtime National Security Advisor, that he stuffed "code-word"-class secret documents into his pants, sneaked them out of a secure review room at the National Archives and "inadvertently" destroyed them is highly disquieting to those familiar with Berger's background and activities in the Clinton Administration.

In particular, the Washington Post reports1 that Berger purloined all draft revisions of a key critique of the government's response to the millennium terrorism threat, a document that detailed Administration knowledge - and inaction - regarding al Qaeda presence in the U.S. in 1999 and 2000. Stolen were crucial notes in the margins of these drafts which reveal the thinking and agendas of the Clinton Administration relating to the mounting terrorist threat.

Cui bono? And when the losses were discovered, why did the Archives staff notify Bruce Lindsey? Lindsey, whom Time Magazine called Clinton's consigliere, is the brilliant legal tactician both Clintons can thank for their continued freedom.

Berger has an impressive resume, but not one that obviously qualified him as NSA. He entered White House service a millionaire lawyer and lobbyist with a career centered on expanding trade with China.3

Former FBI Director Louis Freeh opined that "he was a public-relations hack, interested in how something would play in the press."4 Indeed, Clinton's brilliant poll-meister, Dick Morris, noted Berger "seemed to work overtime at opposing tough measures against terror",5 advising vetoes of legislation aimed at crippling Iranian terror funding and working to block antiterror sanctions.

It was Berger who repeatedly rebuffed Sudanese offers to hand Osama bin Laden to the United States in a deal brokered by a $900,000 contributor to Democrat campaigns.6, 7

It was Berger who allowed bin Laden and his top lieutenants to escape to Afghanistan.8

It was Berger whose calls Bill Clinton ducked in 1998 when bin Laden was briefly vulnerable to missile attack.9

It was Berger who was singled-out by former UN Inspector Scott Ritter for the collapse of UN inspections efforts in Iraq.10

It was Berger who helped broker the farcical antinuclear treaty with North Korea. It was Berger who ultimately admitted that the Clinton Administration had failed to develop a war plan to fight al Qaeda.11

At the same time, it was Berger who was the go-to man in the Administration on matters regarding China policy in the years when Communist Chinese money was being funneled into Democrat Party coffers in exchange for policy concessions and strategic nuclear technology.

China space shot has military implications

China launches first manned space flight
Reuters | 10-14-03

Wed 15 October, 2003 02:07 BST

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has launched its first manned space flight from the Gobi desert, Xinhua news agency says, in its bid to become the third country to put a man in orbit after the former Soviet Union and the United States.

The Shenzhou V, or "Divine Ship V", was expected to orbit the Earth 14 times before returning after about 21 hours.

Xinhua said the craft carried astronaut Yang Liwei, 38. The launch on Wednesday, 42 years after the Soviet Union put the first man into space, marked a milestone for China's secretive space programme, which analysts say has its sights set on a manned mission to the moon.

It was Berger whom DNC Chairman Don Fowler approached for favors for George Chao-chi Chu, a Chinagate-linked John Huang crony described as having "unusual access to high-ranking Communist officials in China" who, like the just-exited chief-foreign-policy-advisor Berger, has current ties to John Kerry.12

And it was Berger who the Energy Department approached with warnings of Chinese spying in Los Alamos, and who stonewalled the matter for three years.13

The list goes on and on14: Berger was not just the malfeasant, poll-driven, cowardly hack at the helm of our national security apparatus who enabled the global metastasis of bloodthirsty jihad; he was not just one of the key people who roadblocked cooperation between law enforcement and foreign intelligence, stacking "Gorelick's Wall" ever higher. In fact, as bagman for the Communist Chinese, Sandy Berger was himself likely one of the key beneficiaries of Gorelick's Wall.

Viewed against his record, Berger's theft and destruction of "code-word"-level secret documents - and "The Consigliere's" stealthy involvement - is all too readily understood.
