Romance is good!! I don't mind my jedis seein' romance!

They still make a face every time they kiss though...which I think is pretty hysterical. I tell 'em "DON'T LOOK!! You'll get pneumonia!"

Don't ask me why...it just makes them laugh so I say it.

I go to MIT

I'm surprised you're not watching the "Tech Channel" tonight or working on your entry in the Robot Wars or preparing for the Junk Yard Wars

The difference between the hype for Episode 1 and this movie is astounding.

I used to devour issues of Cinescape that had previews of Episode 1. Today I really haven't been thinking about it all that much.

Here's what I don't want in ROTS: Any more "romantic" scenes between Anakin and Padme unless Lucas completely turns that function over to a different writer. I actually liked the rest of EP II, but whenever Anakin had to profess his love for Padme, I wanted to hit the mute button.

If one thinks the acting in a George Lucas scripted and directed movie is bad, then one should not blame the actors. No actor should be held responsible for their performance in a movie directed by George Lucas. Why? Well first of all Lucas claims to go for some arcane acting style from the 1930s that is apparently short on emotive moments, and secondly because he is known for not being an actor-friendly director in his approach and style -- meaning he's not known for being very hands-on and interactive and for giving insightful direction. He does care more about the special effects because he considers them to be more important in this type of movie, and therefore he puts much more effort in them over the acting.

One thing he did do well on these new movies was the casting (post Jake Lloyd that is, and even he shouldn't be blamed for that awfully-written role). Natalie Portman, Hayden Christensen, Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Samuel L Jackson, Ian McDiarmid, Christopher Lee, etc are all very good and talented actors. They have all proven themselves in other roles on more than one occasion. Personally I think they have been unfairly criticized (esp Portman, Christensen, and McGregor) for two reason; 1. All that I said about Lucas and 2. I think they are actually good for the most part in these movies.

But there is no doubt that they all could have been better, but that would have required Lucas to give them a better script with better dialogue and well-written characters, and better direction. The buck starts and stops with Lucas. Don't blame the actors.

Disagree about the cast and acting, but agree 1000% about Lucas.
With total control comes total responsibility.
There was absolutely NO reason for the prequel films to be as disappointing as they are. Lack of money and technology and time cannot be blamed.
Lack of ability to write a decent script with depth and human emotion is- and Lucas' ego and obsessive control is.
Remember him saying, way back when, on a 'Making of...' special: ' The special effects are not the story- the STORY is the story.'
Something radically changed in 20 years.
The first films were brilliant collaborations, good- it appears now- because Lucas had to compromise and collaborate.
He doesn't now- and you have Jar-Jar and scripts so bad they rival 'Plan 9 From Outer Space.'
I love SW- I don't love what Lucas has done with it lately.

Glad that we mostly agree, but I'm always curious about people who say that Lucas can no longer write or direct, and then turn around and blame the actors for coming up short under his direction from a script he wrote. The two who have taken the most flack -- Christensen and Portman -- without question had the most most emotionally complex roles but yet received the least to work with from Lucas via his script and direction. They have shown what they can do and how good they are in other parts. Shattered Glass and Life as a House for Christensen and Cold Mtn and The Professional for Portman. I've heard good things about her in that upcoming movie with the guy from Scrubbs too. I think with a better script and/or a different director those two would have shined, as would have the rest of the cast.

I have to agree with all that you said. To me, the special effects have been great. The quality of actors for the most part has improved, but script quality has been way off and the story lines have sucked.

But the absolute worst part, without any doubt whatsoever, was and still is, Jar Jar Binks. Seriously, what the heck was Lucas thinking?!?

I was there for the first Star Wars and I've been there for all the rest. But none have quite had the magic that was the very first Star Wars. I'm hoping that the magic will return with the next one.

"...said Steve Sansweet, Director of Content Management and Head of Fan Relations for Lucasfilm. "Let the debates begin."

I'd suggest as a debate topic:

Could this one possibly be as bad as the last two?

Normally I would agree with you... but I actually thought Hayden did a particularly good job in AOTC...

Did you see Natalie in Cold Mountain? She was terrible1

Portman is good if she doesn't have to act.

I guess I mean she looks nice.
