Driver Tells Troopers of Terror Plans
ASSOCIATED PRESS/ Las Vegas Sun ^ | 27 July 2004 | LESLIE PARRILLA

Posted on 07/27/2004 6:19:21 PM PDT by NavySEAL F-16

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A driver stopped on an Iowa highway this month was found with flight-training manuals, Arabic documents and night-vision goggles, and he told troopers he knew of terrorist plans to shoot up trains in San Diego, according to court papers.

Michael Wagner, 44, of San Diego, said he had knowledge of terrorist activities and people and groups tied to al-Qaida and the Taliban. Wagner also said that he knew about things in the Muslim communities in San Diego that would interest federal authorities.

...Wagner pleaded innocent Tuesday in U.S. District Court to being a felon in possession of body armor and weapons.

A state trooper stopped the sport utility vehicle Wagner was driving on July 14 after the trooper noticed he was not wearing a seat belt. Wagner told the officer he had no identification and gave a false name. The vehicle license number was "suspicious," court documents said.

The officer called a canine unit to search the SUV and found flight-training manuals, flight-training software, three bulletproof vests, night-vision goggles, a night-vision scope for a rifle, a telescope, a 9mm semiautomatic pistol, a bag of ammunition and marijuana residue in the ashtray.

Also found in the vehicle were numerous pages of literature and documents with Arabic printing, court papers said.

Some of the items were hidden inside a hollowed-out computer hard drive, the papers said.

Wagner told police that the vests were for his children for protection after Sept. 11 and that the night-vision goggles belonged to his son, who was a paintball enthusiast. ...

*********

(And to top it off he seems to be a bit of a pervert around kids.)

Doesn't look like he's too credible:

"Wagner was convicted in California in 1988 of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14, court documents said. He was being held without bail. "

He also explained away what the cops found. This "story" looks like he is looking for some mercy and attention.

There is another thread on this here (Threats, weapons disclosed at hearing). That link, from Omaha, has more info. It includes info about Wagner and his wife's talk of killing the LEO's. (They were recorded whilst in the law's car.)

This is getting picked up in many places. A yahoo news search yields a couple dozen links it seemed. Most of them include the fact that the perp is Muslim scum, but some choose to leave that part out. Here are a few of the links:

Night scopes for rifles are very expensive. So are good night vision goggles. Anybody might have some old kevlar, and even felons sometimes have pistols and a bag of ammunition. Add in the gentleman's specific religious persuasion, though, and the materials on aircraft piloting: this incident looks like "we" caught a sabateur or enemy operator.

--- Snip from Omaha Article follows ----

His attorney, Angela Campbell, said the items found in Wagner's vehicle weren't illegal for average citizens to own and suggested that Wagner and his wife, Linda Maguire, were targeted because they are Muslim.

Books written in Arabic, including the Koran, along with hundreds of pages printed from the Internet on the Iraqi war and terrorism, were found in Wagner's vehicle.

Wagner and his wife, who was at the court hearing, are both Muslim converts. Wagner and Maguire married in a Muslim ceremony, but they are not legally wed. They have a 9-year-old son together.

Everyone: I'm joining this party late, so if the following articles are already in your head, forgive my insult to your work. I did quick searches here on FR.com and did not see them posted.

Note these articles are all from July 15th and 16th

2 in Custody after Device Found
excerpt from this article:

Two people are in custody after law enforcement officials said they found a bomblike device in the couple's SUV.
The Joint Terrorism Task Force was called into help, which includes the Secret Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms, and Explosives, and the FBI, was called to help.

Man is not on Terrorism Watch List

excerpt from this article:

Michael Wagner is under arrest for being a felon in possession of a firearm and giving false information. Iowa state troopers said they found a gun, a bulletproof vest and night vision goggles in the San Diego man's pickup truck.
Wagner said he was unfairly detained.
The FBI said he's not on a national terrorism watch list because no such list exists. However, the bureau said he could be on a local list in California.

Man Charged after Device Found in SUV

hack job excerpt from this article:

A man taken into custody Wednesday night when police found a suspicious device in his car has been identified.

Michael Wagner, 44, of San Diego, is charged in Pottawattamie County Court as a felon in possession of a firearm for a pistol he was carrying. He is also charged with solicitation of a felony and providing false information. Wagner and a woman he was traveling with were pulled over for speeding just outside Underwood, Iowa, on Interstate 80. Police found a bomblike device in the SUV they were driving. The device turned out to be no concern and the woman was released.

... He said he wasn't wearing his Muslim headpiece as he drove his wife and many of their belongings.

"As a Muslim, you try to go incognito," Wagner said. "He got one box, pulled it out, cut it open and the first book he picks up was the Koran. His eyes got really big," Wagner said.

Wagner said as soon as the trooper realized he was Muslim, he called in the terrorism task force. At least 20 investigators arrived to sift through his van. They found enough to be suspicious.

Also, there is video via this link: http://www.theomahachannel.com/news/3533743/detail.html

Finally, I'm not sure if I've done good or done spam w/ the ping list I put together. Therefore I offer this: Sorry AND you're welcome. :-)

Yeah. I thought that was pretty queer too. Who knows. Disinformation seems a stretch to me this far into the war. Hell, as far as I'm concerned I should have to look at faces and lists of known muslim f--ks every time I go across state lines or whatever. Wanna buy stamps at the PO counter? Okay, but ya gotta look at photos of scum first. Ridge shouldn't buy ads telling me to buy duct tape, he should buy prime time to flash faces of islamic sh!t and their last known location on the screen.

Well, it's a thought anyway.

Thank you for posting. I caught, as did other posters, the line about "no national terrorism watch list" quite interesting.

There certainly seems to be a lot going on that the general public is not aware of -- one reason I am grateful for Free Republic -- someone is always finding things that are very applicable to us -- if not to the MEDIA.

Thanks again for posting.
