Big Apple Terror?
Sources: Al Qaeda Plotting to Attack New York City Corporations
ABCNEWS.com

N E W  Y O R K, July 31, 2004? ABC News has learned that federal and New York City officials have received credible intelligence that al Qaeda has been plotting to carry out suicide attacks on corporations based in the city.

Sources at several law enforcement agencies tell ABC News that an "overseas source" has provided the information about the threat to New York and that it is more significant than the usual "chatter" intercepted from likely terrorists that has prompted warnings in the past.

Officials from dozens of local and federal agencies met into the night Friday and again this morning.

"Intelligence reporting indicates that al Qaeda continues to target for attack commercial and financial institutions, as well as international organizations, inside the United States," the New York City Police Department said in a statement released today on the "ongoing al Qaeda threat."

"The NYPD recommends that corporate and institutional security directors review their protection of HVAC systems, parking installations, and security in general," the statement added. "The alert level for New York City remains unchanged at 'orange' or 'high.'"

Border Worries

Intelligence sources say al Qaeda plans to move non-Arab terrorists across the border with Mexico.

Authorities already have in custody a woman of Pakistani-origin arrested after crossing into Texas. She carried a South African passport with several of the pages torn out, $7,000 in cash and an airplane ticket to New York.

New York is already on heightened alert for the Republican National Convention, which meets at Madison Square Garden in a month and will bring scores of high government officials to town.

The sources tell ABC News that Wall Street firms may be among the targeted U.S. corporations based in New York City. Which corporations or how many may be targeted has not been revealed.

Suicide Truck Bombings

Particularly disturbing to authorities were the intelligence reports that the attack may involve one or more suicide truck bombings, a tactic never seen in the United States, but one widely used by terrorists elsewhere.

"I think they want to try and shake our psyche again," says Jerry Hauer, an ABC News consultant and former director of New York City's Office of Emergency Management. "And I think the easy types of attacks right now are car bombs, truck bombs."

Law enforcement officials acknowledge such bombs are extremely difficult to prevent.

As to the timing of any planned attack, sources say it could take place between now and Election Day in November.

As the government tries to verify the reports of the threat, there are no plans to raise the national threat level, a senior Bush administration official tells ABC News.

ABCNEWS' Pierre Thomas and Bob Jamieson contributed to this report.

"Yet, GWB and most Washington politicians still won't make a concerted effort for border control."

You're wrong. That's the sort of false crap that the Buchanan pukes keep spouting.

Ok, I see you say difficult, not impossible. I guess I would agree that security might at least make it difficult for the enemy. I still fear though that we as a country don't have the ability to defend ourselves even to the best of our ability to do so, largely due to the Democrats and their worries about racial profiling and the like. e.g. the civil rights of Jose Padilla.

I'm going to NYC on august 27th. This is not good news. Don't know what to do. Plane and hotel fare already purchased. Throw caution to the wind?

I believe that art depicts the 1999 Egyptian downing of the plane, rather than 9/11.

>>A repeat of the Spanish election debacle is not out of the question.<<

The idiots in Spain thought that they were being targeting only because they were in Iraq or were in support of our war on terror. They felt if they installed a government that was against the war, they wouldn't get hit. That's not the case here, and I dare say most Americans are sensible enought to know that. Don't quote me on this, however.

Its not so much the attack itself, but the decisive action after the attack which would propel Bush. I think Bush's reelection is pretty much a done deal (Americans do not vote for liberals), and don't think any attack will matter much at all. So while I agree somewhat with your main point, I don't agree that the reasons or the result will be even the least bit like Spain.

The Egypt Air flight was a JFK to Cairo route and went down off Nantucket, Mass on Oct 31, 1999. The plane in the jihad calendar is heading towards lower Manhattan on the September 2001 page. If it was remembering the Egypt Air downing, why didn't the jihadists put the photo in October?

The problem is that it's NOT suspicious. Granted, you won't see long-haul freight moving through lower Manhattan. But there are a couple million people who live in Manhattan, and all those goods have to come in some how.

Not easy choices.

Don't pretend to know either way whether fear is valid or not here.

By private reply here though I will send you an email here though, just as to my personal thoughts here, though I am not someone in any kind of know as far as the intelligence goes, as say a local cop or federal official might be.

You need to read some of Tancredo's assessments of the illegals problem.

Your blanket denial is kind of empty. Sort of like all of John Kerry's 'I have a plan' statements.

Where do you think all the illegals come from---18 million of them (rough estimate). They aren't all falling out of spaceships.

I followed the same trail as you for a long time... the calendar does not map out dates for execution but may be a 'yehaw' after-the-fact sort of pep rally.

Thank you for posting it - and there are some interesting details regarding the woman schoolteacher in Holland who distributed it vis a vis the flight training school in FT. Lauderdale.

FR has exceptional libraries.

I agree with you, I see what you see and it concerns me...but sometimes when a country is deceived it ends up with brand new outlook on life. I just hope the damage isn't in human lives.

I have a bad feeling too. It seems to me that a bunch of bombers like they are having in the middle east would be devastating, maybe moreso than a big attack.

I'm praying Dubya and his convention are smart enough to pull the same type of thing in transfer of Iraqi power...and leave the terrorists , protestors and other insignificants holding the bag in NYC...it would make sense to me, but moving such a large party is difficult to say the least.

"You need to read some of Tancredo's assessments of the illegals problem."

Tancredo is Buchanan's sock puppet. The director of his website/organization is Buchanan's smarmy sister Bay. Trancredo was warned by DeLay about his anti-Bush propaganda and thrown out of the White House by Karl Rove with instructions to never come back.

But since you've fallen for the Buchanan lies, why don't you go ahead and explain to all of us why electing Kerry will make the southern border more secure.

It shows how sad a condition this country is in when the issue of a terrorist attack is creating as much talk about the political ramifications as about our response. This is sad to me. If we start getting terrorist attacks on our soil and our response is to weigh the effects on an election, we are truly lost and deserve to lose our fine republic. The atmosphere is poisonous,,both here and among the dems. We do this as much as dems do and I just hate it.
