Kerry defends his '70s anti-war activities

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Sen. John F. Kerry [related, bio] expressed pride in his 1970s antiwar activism yesterday as controversy continued to swirl over a TV ad accusing him of betraying his fellow veterans when he protested the Vietnam war.

``I stood up against the war in the 1970s,'' Kerry said. ``Some people still don't like that, and they're still trying to fight that. That's 35 years old. But I'm proud of what I did to stand up. And I learned a lot.''

A group calling itself Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth launched a TV spot accusing Kerry of dishonoring his country and ``lying'' in Senate testimony about atrocities committed during the war.

The ad also claims Kerry did not deserve his combat medals. But the controversy grew deeper yesterday as one key member of the group first seemed to back off his criticism - then stood by his original charges.

George Elliott, one of Kerry's war commanders, told the Boston Globe he should not have signed an affidatit suggesting Kerry didn't deserve his Silver Star.

``It was a terrible mistake probably for me to sign the affidavit with those words. I'm the one in trouble here,'' the Globe quoted Elliott as saying.

Later yesterday, Elliott issued another affidavit saying the Globe had misquoted him and that he believed Kerry has ``not been honest about what happened in Vietnam.''

Next week, the group will release a book called ``Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry [related, bio].''

But Jim Rassmann, who credits Kerry with saving his life in Vietnam, said, ``What these people have said is not true, and a lot of it is grossly inaccurate. These gentlemen appear to be making this up as they go along, and they are not keeping their stories straight.''

White House spokesman Scott McClellan yesterday repeated a call for ``an end to all the ads and activity by these shadowy groups that are funded by unregulated soft money.''

"John Kerry has blood of American soldiers on his hands," North said.

Yep. Kerry tried to silence those who'd question him about his service through "war hero propaganda", but the "hero" propaganda had a short life.
The truth was bulging at the seem, and finally exploded to get get out. Kaboom!

Thanks for the info but is there a lot of difference? Do we really want other countries, esp France and Germany involved in our elections? I mean he's the POTUS and can just tell the Dems no. It's probably going to be ugly enough as it is, without foreign involvement, IMO.

I was in ROTC at Cornell during the time that Kerry was performing his 'Nam-related antics. Might I understate that he and his organization was not a positive influence for my ROTC experience, and that of my classmates.

I have no idea what the SwiftVets saw there, and being AF myself, have no concept of naval tactics or methods of operation. I would like to hear more from them.

They deserve an opportunity to explain at length what they saw, heard and felt. The media ought to give them a fair chance to do so, grill them at length, and make every effort to get the full story.

I just heard Tony Snow say that GB has invited the UN to monitor our elections. He tired of being president or what?

Absolutely NOT true!

See Krodg's post above.

That's 35 years old.

THE NERVE!!!

He's done nothing put preen himself all year about being a war hero and then poo-poohs his anti-war past by saying "That's 35 years old"???

Yes, Kerry, I think the whole damn subject is 35 years old and if you were any sort of a real man you'd be campaigning about how your record in the Senate qualifies you to be president or how your stand on the issues qualifies you to be president.

Instead YOU are the one that bases your whole candidacy on something that happened 35 years ago.

Shove it, Kerry! Shove it up your pinko ass!

(sorry, Jenya, none of this meant for you...)

``What these people have said is not true, and a lot of it is grossly inaccurate”

OK! What is it? Untrue, or grossly inaccurate? Because it can’t be both.

The fact that Kerry lied to a Senate hearing, is already an admitted fact by Kerry. He called it an exaggeration, (a nice word for not telling the truth), when he told the committee about atrocities that he never witnessed. And did his country a great disservice by doing so. On the other hand, he gave great ammunition to the Viet-con propagandist.

As for Kerry’s Vietnam service, there are obviously differneces of opinion amongst his fellow soldiers. He made his heroic service to his country the main focal point of his campaign. If there are other’s who served with him who didn’t see as being so heroic, then it is up to him to dispute their charges.

There is no defense for lying!!!

. Did the three other men fall out of the disabled boat?

According to the SBV interview, yes. There were 4. Others were pulled out by other soldiers, but no mention of them getting Silver Stars for doing so. (It appears Kerry was the only one for some reason. Maybe the Sliver was one of those medals Kerry applied for himself, and the paper work snuck through the system like the others?)

Great. So the SCOTUS not high enough now? I don't like this.

What else can he do? The Democrats have already hired thousands of left wing trial lawyers to monitor the election. You know what they'll do. The election wouldn't be settled for years, and Bush would be slammed again by the lying left.
This way, the lawyers lose most of their power. The left would have to war with UN if there's a problem.
What else can Bush do? What would you do?
