On the floor of the Senate on March 27, 1986, Sen. John Kerry issued this statement: "I remember Christmas of 1968 sitting on a gunboat in Cambodia. I remember what it was like to be shot at by Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge and Cambodians, and have the President of the United States telling the American people that I was not there; the troops were not in Cambodia. I have that memory which is seared -- seared -- in me."
Mr. Kerry's statement at the time was similar to other statements he had made after returning from duty in Vietnam, and throughout much of the 1970s. Writing for the Boston Herald in October 1979, Mr. Kerry said this: "I remember spending Christmas Eve of 1968 five miles across the Cambodian border being shot at by our South Vietnamese allies who were drunk and celebrating Christmas. The absurdity of almost being killed by our own allies in a country in which President Nixon claimed there were no American troops was very real."
First, the obvious: Richard Nixon was not president in December 1968, and no history of the Vietnam era suggests that Lyndon Johnson ever ordered troops into Cambodia; but those are minor points. |

The inconsistencies in Mr. Kerry's Cambodia story should be explained, either by an inquisitive press corps or by the Kerry campaign itself. They will be, right after their investigative reporting on Sandy Berger.

"Christmas in Cambodia" establishes Kerry as a proven liar, who will lie repeatedly when he perceives a political advantage.
It leads to the strong suspicion that the man lied to Congress in 1971 about his VN comrades being baby killing rapists and monsters.
It calls his incredible medal collecting record into question as well.
Not to mention his imaginary meetings with unnamed world leaders just this spring.

The inconsistencies in Mr. Kerry's Cambodia story should be explained, either by an inquisitive press corps... Is it just me, or does it seem to anybody else, that for information that would not be particularly helpful to the Kerry campaign, that the press corps appears not especially insquisitive at all?

Over at JohnKerry.com, you can read "After-action" reports first-hand accounts written immediately following combat from Mr. Kerry's Vietnam tour. Strangely, the reports extend only as far back as February 1969. Well isn't that special

Wow, Kerry really is "Al Gore without the glitz."
So if the press won't get inquisitive over this quite compact collection of Greatest Hits lies, some of them in the Congressional Record, what can't Democrats lie about?
Lying about sex is OK. Lying about socks (Sandy Burglar's document-stuffed ones) is OK. And now we find that lying about miles is OK.
This actually fits our impression of liberals nicely: ends-justifying-means elitists who are above all rules and laws.
