For all of the old farts out there that know a good revolver can settle a social fracas as well as a pistol, I got good news. Smith&Wesson is going to reintroduce the Model of 1950 .44 Military to be known as the Thunder Ranch Special Model 21-4. This will be a blued N-Frame, round butt, skinny barreled, fixed sight, .44 Special. I currently have an old Model of 1926 .44 Special, as well as an adjustable sight 6 1/2" Model 24 and a 4" Model 624 .44 Special. This retro model will bring us back to a simpler time, and for those from the Southwest, give an opportunity to own one of the more popular guns used by Southwest Peace Officers. I know the .44 Maggie can do more, has ammo interchangability, has more power etc., but for those more relaxed times you'll be able to slip on a hand tooled(basetweave) El Paso Saddelry Tom Three Persons holster, belt, and slide ammo carrier. Buffalo Bore bullets makes a .44 Special load that sends a 250 Keith bullet at 1000 fps from a 4" barrel @ SAAMI pressures. An ideal companion for the woods, the desert, or the jungles of New Jersey.(something for Mr.Benchley @ DU) The gun will be a standard item, not from the custom shop, so it should be affordable. I know there are better weapons out there for us to get to our rifles, but I for one am looking forward to acquiring one of these. Keep your powder dry. TP
Maadi-Griffin used to make a pistol chambered for the .50 BMG before they got rail-roaded by the Feds. Supposedly, the recoil really wasn't that bad.
I am a Colt Python owner but will be first to admit there's nothing like a S&W action. I also own a Mod 17 and a Mod 34 Smith in .22 and shoot the heck out of these.
Sounds like a nice gun. I hope S&W submits it through the California DOJ extortion, I mean safety testing process. Otherwise, we won't be able to buy them here.
I have two Rugers .357s. One is the Super Blackhawk that I bought in 1971, and a brandy-new Bisley Vaquero. I'm getting into Cowboy Action Shooting. The Stoeger is the 12 ga SBS; and am looking into a Marlin 94C for the carbine.
Looks like an anti-aircraft gun to me, actually.
When I picked up the 500 the dealer explained that I might want to change out the grips as the recoil was subject to cut the area between thumb and forefinger. However, my husband describes the Ruger 480's recoil to be considerably worse that the S&W 500's. I haven't shot either as I'm partial to long guns and not too fond of wrist pain.
The first I heard of it was in relation to a traditional Scotish kilt.
I'd like to have the new smith in 45 LC. In fact, if they really want to get me to slap down a credit card they should make the old Smith model 58 chambered to fire 45acp in moon clips.
Now that would be a dandy CCW gun I think.
Huh? What is the matter with you Python? I have a 4" that my dad gave me. The only Smiths that I have handled that come close have had a lot of work done to smooth them up.
Here in CA that's difficult since Sacramento in their infinite wisdom decided that the older venerable Smiths are unsafe unless you buy from an individual.
They honestly take the fun out of guns. Almost.
The more I check out the 10MM ballistics, the better it looks.
Indeed, I have often opined that if I lived in Alaska, I might well opt for a 10MM Glock with pre ban 15 round mags. I could dump 15 deep pentrating big bullets into a target faster than I could crank off 3 rounds from a 44 mag.
Course', if you are down to facing a bruin with any pistol, you are in a seriously bad situation to begin with.

That is pretty cool. Thanks. I hadn't heard the kilt story, don't see how that would refer to "giving it all," and always thought 8 yards was the length of a Scotts kilt.

Then you are pretty much down to the S&W 500. It's the badest boy on the lot. More energy at the muzzle than the .444 Marlin or .454 Cusul. 1600-.444. 1900-.454. and 2600-.500.
The 10MM only puts out about 700 with a decent 175 JHP. Much more managable and at 1400 fps, a really good knock down round for human size targets.
The Model Numbers are bogus.

My 6 inch blue Python is positively creeky compared to the Mod 17. My uncle's 629 .44 is also much smoother than the Python. Since the Python is in > 95 percent condition and no longer in production, I've cleaned it and have for the most part retired the gun.
sorry...I am looking to get some PD for myself and the wife, and this fits my bill! Of course the wife could handle this, but it wouldn't fit into her purse.
