The most striking image from John Kerry's campaign for the presidency is him offering a beguiling, if rather hesitant, military salute to the Democratic convention, accompanied by the message that he was "reporting for duty".
This reference to his record as a decorated war hero was a signal that he would exploit what was thought to be his strongest card in a contest with George W Bush, whose own youth was noted for a notoriously unheroic evasion of active duty in Vietnam.
Perhaps carried away by this favoured theme of personal bravery, Mr Kerry has offered up anecdotes from his military adventures that are now coming under the sort of detailed scrutiny that a closely fought political contest brings with it. His most noteworthy story involves what would have been a secret, and illegal, foray into neutral Cambodian territory during the Vietnam war on Christmas Eve of 1968.

When President Nixon...er...Johnson...er...Nixon was looking for someone to illegally cross the border into Cambodia, John Kerry said, "Send me"!
Ouch. That's gonna leave a mark.
He said, "send me" so he could throw that grenade like a girly man to get his self inflicted rice wound
Let's see -- a bronze star; three combat injuries each meriting a Purple Heart; the commission of a war crime and the witnessing of others; a daring rescue; being illegally ordered to Cambodia for no apparent reason, and actually going, over Christmas, or maybe not; having his fellow soldiers film his exploits and assist in re-enactment of some scenes... Wow. Whattaguy.
His grip on that baseball mirrors his grip on reality.
Yeah, quite a guy indeed - he CAN"T become President - he makes Algore look truthful.
Why on earthy do his people allow him to keep making sports photo ops when he looks so damn goofy?
Am I missing some strategy here?
Is there a strategy???
Do ya think, just maybe, that the Kerry campaign is starting to overplay the "young, fun-loving athlete" image? If you're wondering whether he's an athlete just look at his arms. My six year old daughter has bigger guns.
First they try to smear the source. Then they attempt legal imtimidation of the media. Then they try to blur the location between Cambodia and Vietnam. Finally they try to transpose the time between December and January. A classic Dem FUD campaign when confronted with the TRUTH. All part of the massive fraud which is the foundation of the Kerry candidacy.
He needs a haircut.
I just read your wonderful synopsis aloud to the adults in this room and they are still reeling with laughter! Someone chimed in "Here he comes to save the day!"
Bravo! What a great way to put all of Kerry's claims of heroism into perspective.
Thank you!
Imagine how chafed and chapped some on the left feel. They had to endure the Kerry "pro-military" stuff during the convention, when what they wanted to hear was about killing babies and subsidizing bums and deviates, and how "guns cause crime." Now, what irritated them is causing grief for the K-flopper now, and setting the table for some real Americans at the R convention.
Funny, I can`t remember Bob Dole saying "reporting for duty" when he was running in `96, even though he did three years in the Army in WW2 and spent 4 years in the hospital after being shot up leaving him with a shattered shoulder and arm, kidney damage and a broken neck and spine that left him paralyzed from the neck down until he had nine operations. And what did he get for it? Liberals making fun of his disability. After all, Bob Dole only got 2 purple hearts, not like "hero" John Kerry who got 3 in 4 months and had to suffer through 3 band-aids.
This is very interesting for more reasons than Kerry. What we are seeing here is in part the unravelling of an entire mythos, the noble soldier/sailor motivated by moral considerations to oppose the Vietnam war. Kerry's been milking this for three decades, but he isn't the only one - it's been built into a body of closely-held beliefs that all the protestations of those who were really there have been unable to crack...until now. Not only political careers were built on this - I don't think "paradigm" is too strong a word - but journalistic and academic careers as well. This is all up for grabs now thanks to a few stupid and unnecessary lies by fools who should have known better and did. We should thank them - the corrective is about three decades overdue.
I hope you're right. Something I never thought I'd live to see.
Rush needs to add Secret Agent Man to his Mighty Mouse theme for hanoi john.

Interestingly it's about rewriting history. The claws within the care of Vets and elders which dems decry when it doesn't foster their cause is a tool they use to stifle memory.
