Marriage Amendment Battle Said to Shape Outcome of Fall Elections

WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- Family Research Council President Tony Perkins is encouraging his supporters to follow his plan of action regarding passing the Federal Marriage Amendment in the U.S. House of Representatives in order to "shape the outcome of this fall's election."

In an e-mail to supporters on Wednesday, Perkins said, "We are ready for Round Two in this historic effort to protect the vital institution of marriage," referring to the battle on Capitol Hill over a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman.

Expecting the vote in the House to take place during the week of September 20, Perkins said there are just a few weeks to "prepare for this important vote which could very well shape the outcome of this fall's election."

"Although it will be an uphill battle, the measure actually stands a better chance of passage in the House than it did in the Senate," Perkins explained.

The Federal Marriage Amendment failed to make it to the floor of the U.S. Senate for a vote in July.

But Perkins is optimistic this measure will be a success in the House and is actively promoting it to his supporters to get involved to make it happen.

"Over the next seven weeks we will be sending a 'Weekly 25' list of Congressmen that need to hear from those in their state that want to protect the institution of marriage," Perkins expressed.

He requested his supporters to contact the Congressmen from their own state to let them know you want them to support the Federal Marriage Amendment.

"Even if you don't live in their district, some will have aspirations to run statewide in the future and they also know that you may have family or friends living in their district," Perkins said.

Perkins said it is important that "these representatives must hear from you."

"If they don't think this is an important issue for the people in their state then they will do whatever they can to avoid the issue," predicted Perkins.

In fact, Perkins said this issue should be brought up during town hall meetings conducted by Congressmen while they are at home during the summer recess.

"Please attend these meetings and take friends and family with you," Perkins prodded. "Ask your Congressman if they will protect marriage. Several Senators heard their constituents' overwhelming support for marriage in meetings like these and it had an impact."

Included in this plan of action are calling radio talk shows and writing letters to the editor to "keep the issue before the public and your Congressman."

"When I was in office, the second place I went to in the newspaper after the front page was the letters to the editors," Perkins revealed. "Your opinion counts!"

At the end of his e-mail appeal to supporters to join him in this effort to support traditional marriage, Perkins asked them to "join with us and literally thousands of other Christians who will be praying and fasting for this battle and for revival in our nation."

Perkins said members of the Family Research Council will be fasting on Thursdays in August and urge its supporters to join them in this effort.

The GOP should at least try to make an issue of the role of courts, and frame it as a matter of self governance versus being ruled by the type of activist judges the Dems would appoint.

Self-government versus judiical rule.

Just look at Missouri. They had such a high turn out that they ran out of ballots at soem locations this is an issue that will bring out the religious right in droves. They will also most likely vote for Bush.

I know of a Christian conservative family that has been polled and just hung up. These are people who may not be that active but this issue will bring them to the game.

Just the "Evangelical Christians" alone, who are of voting age, were to register to vote and vote, it would be a landslide for Bush.

If you were to add to that the pro-life Catholics, it would be no contest in any state of the Union for the Democrats...even dog-catcher.

It is alarming the number of Christians that did not vote in 2000 and 2002. In the 2000 presidential election, only one out of three 18-to-24 year olds voted. And a mere 45 percent of them have even bothered to register.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

From a CBN.com article regarding the effort to get Christians to vote:

The biggest bloc of voters for George W. Bush in 2000 were Evangelical Christians. About 40 percent of his vote came from this group of believers.

And yet some four to six million Evangelicals who would likely have been Bush-voters didn't even bother to show up Election Day. If they had, Bush would have won by a landslide at the polls, rather than having to secure the presidency by a 5-to-4 vote at the Supreme Court.

What's surprising is that the biggest bloc of Evangelicals on Election Day, 2000 were the non-voters, which came in as a majority: 52 percent.

Even among those Evangelicals who label themselves Republicans, one-third didn't vote. The last group of Americans to receive the right to vote were 18-to-21 year olds in the year 1971. When they had their first chance to exercise that right, the 1972 presidential election, only 50 percent voted. And that number's been shrinking ever since.

In the 2000 presidential election, only one out of three 18-to-24 year olds voted. And a mere 45 percent of them have even bothered to register.

Yet each vote in these days of a country divided almost exactly 50-50 between Republicans and Democrats could make a crucial difference.

Remember Florida? That key state finally gave George W. Bush his victory by just 527 votes. That is why groups on both sides of the political divide are doing all they can to register as many voters as they can in the next few months, and why they'll spend tens of millions of dollars to get their partisans to the polls, come November 2nd.

Dr. Randy Brinson is the spokesman for RTV, or "Redeem the Vote," a national voter registration movement. RTV was organized to encourage America's youth to vote, by showing them how relevant their vote is to their future and to the future of America. Gordon Robertson spoke with Dr. Brinson to find out further details of this campaign.

------------------------------------------------

We must hope that it is different this November.

- Homosexual Agenda PING -

While I'm anticipating Round Two of the FMA, I'm also keeping an eye on HR 3313, which passed the House last month. HR 3313 strengthens DOMA, and essentially makes it so a judge can't declare DOMA unconstitutional. HR 3313 is advantageous for us, as it makes it "a state issue", which is what a lot of the Dem Senators and RINO's were saying in their opposition to the FMA.

Make no mistake about it...this IS THE ISSUE that has woken up Christians and forced them to get involved. The more attacks that traditional marriage suffers, the more Christians will get involved.

Sodomite Activists don't realize that what they're doing is only going to destroy their cause. I've had people tell me, "It wasn't any of my business until THEY MADE IT my business!"

God is Good - and all things will work out according to His timeframe, not ours. We need to keep the fires burning, keep the people interested, keep spreading the word, keep speaking the Truth...and most of all, pray.

(If you want on or off this ping list, please Freepmail me.)
