Guns don't kill people. Wives that come home early kill people.

Actually, my wife thought she was interested in a shotgun. I borrowed a Remington 870 from a friend, and bought a couple of boxes of shells, and she LOVED it! I couldn't get it away from her. :-)

She didn't find it uncomfortable and recoil wasn't bad with low brass shells.

But...alas, she settled for an Armalite/Eagle AR-15 A-2. :-)

HOWEVER.....as a general rule, you can't go wrong by procuring a good shotgun for home defense. I wouldn't recommend that everybody use an AR-15 for this. Too many people will end up poking holes in neighbors houses and other things outside the target zone. :-)

Sig P239 in 9mm with night sights. Accurate, reliable, concealable, easy to shoot.

I have a Taurus .38 lightweight, but I don't recommend it for a first gun. It is uncomfortable to shoot and not very accurate past 15 feet or so. If she plans to spend one day a month at the range, then fine, get her a lightweight .38 and let her practice, practice, practice. But that will be what is required.

I'm not familiar personally with the Rugar 9, but that would be one I would suggest you check out. It's fairly small, light, and made by a reputable company. I'm not a big Glock fan, not because their weapons are bad, but they are poorly designed. Glock fans can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you have to pull the trigger to field strip. That's all I need to know to say the gun is inherently flawed. You should pull the trigger for one reason and one reason only.

The 9 is a great and underappreciated weapon. You have many loads to work with, some with all the stopping power of a .40 or .45. And its much cheaper to practice with. Go to the range a minimum of 4 times a year.

Would a shotgun be safer as far as wall penetration is concerned? We have a small home and if I shot someone in my upstairs hallway, there is a good chance that something could go through the wall into my daughter's room.

I'm really ignorant about guns so if I'm asking stupid questions, I apologize.

Ruger SP101 hammerless in .38 Special.

I recommend it in 357 magnum loaded with +P's.

Have her pracice with 38 wadcutters and slip a magnum in for thrills! (only if you have no concern over which whay she will shoot the next round!)

I, like most handgun owners, have likes and dislikes.

If you "buy her one", odds are it'll end up in the safe, or worse, on the top closet shelf.

This'll save you some money:

Find a range that rents.

Let her try several and find one that suits her.

Buy her that one.

Seemed the .38 was just a little lighter. Besides, at 10 yards I would rather she shoot more accurately which I think is usually the case with the relative muzzel blast from a 21/2 inch barrel.

Sitting in a purse, probably cleaned once a year, is not babied. Hence, an auto very may JAM when needed. (As an aside I carry an small frame auto -- a Sig .380 --- BUT I baby my gun.)

My wife's Sig 380 never sat in the purse all year. I insisted that if she wanted to rely on it, we had to go to the range at least once a month and clean it thoroughly each time.

You've already got lots of great advice pointing toward a lightweight 38 or 357 revolver. Let me just add the lighter the weapon, the greater the recoil. So you might want to stay away from the titanium or aluminum framed guns which are light to carry every day but harder to shoot. If she's not carrying, get a steel frame.
(2) Let her test out as many as possilbe at the range before buying. The fit to the hand is different for each person and she may hate something I like.
(3) Do some reseach and find a GOOD gunfighting school in your area. Put her through the beginning class. It will make a world of difference and years of self instruction won't match what an experienced teacher can show you in one afternoon.
