REDWOOD CITY -- Cellular telephone records indicating Scott Peterson's movements on the day authorities think he dumped his pregnant wife's body are all but useless, a prosecution witness admitted in startling cross-examination testimony Monday.
Prosecutors long have relied on Peterson's phone records to form a theory that the Modesto man used his pickup truck and newly purchased boat to dispose of Laci Peterson's body in San Francisco Bay on Christmas Eve 2002.
But Mary Anderson of AT&T Wireless conceded Monday that the records don't always pinpoint a caller's location -- and can be misleading by miles.
Prosecutors used Scott Peterson's phone records to suggest that he checked his voice mail while driving from his home to his warehouse starting at 10:08 a.m. that day. That would provide Laci Peterson only 10 minutes to finish mopping, change clothes and begin walking her dog before a neighbor found the pet, leash still attached, in the street at 10:18 a.m.

Peterson's former girlfriend also told a packed courtroom that detectives asked her to tape the couple's telephone calls because police hoped he would incriminate himself in his pregnant wife's disappearance -- or provide information eliminating him as a suspect.
But that second reason never showed up in police reports or transcripts, defense attorney Mark Geragos indicated sarcastically.
Prosecutors have pointed to Peterson's affair with Frey as a possible reason for him to kill his wife, Laci, and their unborn son, Conner, on or just before Dec. 24, 2002. The 31-year-old fertilizer salesman could receive the death penalty if convicted.......

REDWOOD CITY – Scott Peterson's defense lawyers concluded their much anticipated cross-examination Tuesday of his former mistress as she acknowledged Peterson never told her he loved her.
The cross-examination of Amber Frey in Peterson's double murder trial lasted two days after jurors, over five days, heard about 40 taped telephone calls between Frey and Peterson. In the calls, the former fertilizer salesman romanced Frey while denying his involvement in the disappearance of his pregnant wife, Laci, insistently proclaiming his love for the missing woman.
Prosecutors claim it was Peterson's love for Amber that drove him to murder his pregnant wife. Defense lawyers are trying to portray Frey as a calculated seductress and liar who .....

The name of a Fresno police officer was brought up in the Peterson case on Tuesday.
Detective Richard Byrd's name has surfaced a number of times during the trial, specifically when it comes to his friendship with Amber Frey.
In cross examination, Amber Frey testified that while she was seeing Scott Peterson, she made 50 to 75 calls to her friend Richard Byrd.
Frey also testified that Byrd had suspicions about Peterson.
It was Byrd who told her Peterson was married and that his wife was missing.
Frey told the court that Byrd offered to check Peterson out for her.
Legal analyst Jim Hammer says there is reason for concern, "It would be a crime if a police officer in California illegally accessed law enforcement databases for a friend. Again, I don't know what the whole truth is yet, but he's teased us with the idea that perhaps Amber Frey had her friends in law enforcement illegally access computers."...............

August 25, 2004 -- REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — Amber Frey sent out bizarre Christmas cards of her and Scott Peterson less than a month after they met — without even telling Peterson, it was revealed yesterday.
The sexy masseuse also admitted to defense lawyer Mark Geragos under cross-examination that the seamy evidence she gave cops of her illicit affair with the slay suspect included an empty condom wrapper from one of their torrid trysts two weeks earlier.
That paved the way for Geragos to snidely suggest she had been holding onto the wrapper in yet another sign of her rabid obsession with his client, and the lawyer demanded to know why she'd kept the trash.
"I wasn't home that much" to throw it out, responded Frey as her current boyfriend, chiropractor David Markovich, intently looked on in the courtroom.

(CBS/AP) As Scott Peterson's former girlfriend, Amber Frey, took the witness stand Monday for her much anticipated cross-examination, there was a hush in the courtroom.
Judge Alfred Delucchi looked to defense lawyer Mark Geragos to begin questioning Frey. There was silence.
"No questions, your honor," Geragos said. The courtroom was abuzz with whispers. The judge looked bewildered, his mouth agape. Prosecutors seemed stunned.
"Just kidding," Geragos said with a grin, prompting muffled chuckles among a few jurors and members of the audience. The attorney then launched into his questions for just 10 minutes before the trial broke for lunch.
This is Frey's third week in the courtroom but the first time the prosecution's star witness has had to face hostile questioning by Geragos, who can be ruthless with witnesses, reports CBS News Correspondent John Blackstone.
