I need help. I am becoming a gadfly
Vanity | 8/27/04 | UpInArms

I am becoming a gadfly. I cannot socialize without discussing politics and then it wells up in me. I am making others uncomfortable. The evening is ruined because find myself speaking in very unflattering terms about a man that should have been prosecuted for war crimes he admitted to the millions of people while defaming good and honorable men and women who served our country instead of leading a major political party. I was fine until that someone just had to report for duty. Now all the hate and anger of the late 60’ and early 70’s is revisited. It is welling up in me again. Damn Kerry. I hate the man. I hate the left. I hate the hate America bunch. I hate the creeps that sold our generation down the creek.

Am I the only one that feels this way? Are there any others that act as I do? Are there others that cannot seem to control their ire? Any suggestions as to how I can manage my anger?

Is there anyone here who DOESN'T feel that way? Especially after Freeping until all hours?

I'm going to have to agree with Walburg on this one. I'm sure the entire Free Republic would probably agree with this one.

On the other hand, both of you could be freaks as well. :) Hehe!

Yep, but I found a really hot girl to hang out with after class who is the only other conservative in my World Politics class...

Well, she might have a boyfriend, I only just spoke with her today after having to rigorously defend Bush against 20 some odd undecided/liberals. But, if she doesn't I'll have a girl I can talk to since my best friend who is a girl is a liberal... daughter of a union manager.

Soften it with humor and subtlety. Don't be didactic, where it is inappropriate. Don't be a bore. Just my suggestions.

At social occasions do NOT discuss politics, unless you are sure that you are talking to people who feel as you do.

Tempting, as it is, stay away from it.

Ask people about their personal activities, what did they do last weekend, about their hobbies, children, parents, jobs, anything, but politics, and don't let anyone else start talking about politics either.

You are not alone. It's very difficult dealing with idiots.
Some people can't grasp the magnitude of sacrifice it took to make this country great. As long as they have their comfortable little world, fast food, and stupid tv shows, they won't change. Don't worry, you're better than they are.

I've been drywalling this week, will most likely be spending some time next week cutting downed limbs and picking up debris for some old people down where the hurricane hit.

Volunteering and plain old physical work is a good way to get away from some of the nastiness.

Don't talk about politics in public unless you're willing to risk friends and career (and grades, if you're a student). If you do, don't whine when the consequences hit you in your face. Talking politics and getting up in arms is what FR is for.

Calm down. You don't want to end up acting like a liberal.

For much of my life from the time I was 12 I was always getting worked up over politics. I was a bleeding heart liberal until about ten years ago.

Once I changed sides, I slowly started realizing that as a conservative, I had reason and logic on my side.

Now, when politics is discussed, I lay back, waiting in the tall weeds for others to ask me my opinion. All the liberals have already spent their ammunition on their emotional arguments. I slide my reason, logic, and facts from its sheath and proceed to eviscerate the liberals.

You wield tremendous power as a conservative. Be patient and use that power wisely.

Years ago I had visited the Wall. I found some of my school friends. It was very hard and I did not serve. I thought I had been over it all. Now this pompus ass who nearly destroyed our country has the termerity to ask, almost demands, that we swallow all the garbage he heaped on us years ago and make him president. If it weren't so dangerous a situation, it would be laughable. I feel like I am loosing it.

BTW, I'm a single man, 32, student who works weekends. Do any other men find it difficult to meet women?? Single women?? I'm a decent looking guy, honest, and like to joke around. I get the feeling that most women are stuck up and angry! Am I wrong? I try to be jovial and nice and right away i'm the "enemy" cause I try talking to them. Or they're dykes. Also, how come almost every girl I see, driving or walking is on a cell phone. GOD THAT PISSES ME OFF!!!!! I'm getting ready to buy a isolated cabing a become a philosopher. Another thing, I have two brothers who are married, both are 50/50 on being happy with it,( they love their kids, but would rather not be tied down), to all you married dudes out there, is it worth it??? Or should I just give up now?

Sounds like how I felt about Clinton diddling interns while I was trying to figure out why people tried to kill me during the first WTC bombing in 1993.

Understand that if you really want to help the cause, you need to convert people through kindness. Expressing your frustration is just venting energy.

It's the tattoos and strange piercings fads that really drive me up the wall. On politics... don't think I'll ever meet a woman in NYC (or anywhere) who shares my politics, but the great part is that since there are 1/2 million more single women here than single men, they don't have the luxury of saying no because of politics, or they'll end up very lonely.
