MoveOnPlease.org aims at funny bone
By Dana Bartholomew Staff Writer
A Chatsworth comedian's satirical spoof of the liberal Internet site MoveOn.org has generated of a buzz of its own and given creator Steve Young a shot at covering the Republican National convention next week in New York.
For several days after its Aug. 12 debut, MoveOnPlease.Org was one of the most visited Web logs on the Internet.
"Bush is Hitler and Worse," it opined, blaming President Bush for the Hindenburg and other disasters.
Young, who launched the site with the Los Angeles-based National Lampoon, said his goal is to ping anything on a pedestal, especially MoveOn.org.
"It is humorless," he said. "When anybody, right or left, takes themselves too seriously, they need to be ripped."
Ironically, the former comic and Comedy Club owner has been called a "certified liberal," but he says he's "politically in the middle." Jokingly, he labels himself a Whig.
"When someone is so overtly extreme, they're great targets," said Young, also a TV writer and author who last year won global notoriety by auctioning his wife and two kids on eBay for $5 million -- eBay pulled the ad within 24 hours.
"MoveOn is more than political -- it's just overtly overt and extremely extreme. They painted the bull's-eye on themselves."
MoveOn.org touts itself as "Democracy in Action."
MoveOnPlease.org bills itself as "Democracy Inaction."
Billed by Young as an online version of "The Daily Show" for the Right, the site has drawn so many chuckles from conservatives that National Lampoon editors say the office of Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie asked Young to cover the GOP convention in New York next week.
The Republican National Committee declined to comment on the MoveOnPlease site and said it has not yet issued a convention floor pass for the National Lampoon.
MoveOn.org did not respond to a request to comment on its spoof site.
It was Young, political editor of National Lampoon, who reacted when he heard conservative Fox talk host Bill O'Reilly say, "What is this this MoveOn, the next National Lampoon?"
The right, say National Lampoon editors, owns the talk shows. But political satire belongs to the left.
So Young and his Lampooners styled a MoveOn-style spoof with a rap toward the conservative funny bone:
A video trailer for the Cannes 2004 winner titled, "The Michael Moore Story: I am not an (expletive)," a film by Michael Moore, seen flashing a trench coat toward the White House.
A New York Times political ad titled, "First Earth, now Mercury, Keep Bush Off Uranus: George Bush's EPA and the Politics of Pollution."
A blogline reading: "Everything Bad Fault of Rumsfeld: Scientists have found Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, genetically culpable for every contrary event and effect in modern history, including morbid obesity, the Philadelphia Phillies' 23 game losing streak in 1959 and Carrot Top."
"I haven't laughed so hard in all my life," posted one man on Blogsforbush.com the day MoveOnPlease was launched. "This is the best site I have seen in awhile."
"I wonder how long it will be before MoveOn.org sues to silence them?" chirped another.
Scott Rubin, executive editor of National Lampoon, said his magazine home page normally gets 800,000 hits a month. That compares to 400,000 hits a week for its MoveOnPlease.org auxiliary, rated No. 1 in the world by Popdex for three days after its mid-August launch.
"We're really glad to have a site that finally attacks the left, which is kind of rare in the world of humor," said Rubin, who lives in Valencia. "It sort of levels the playing field."
Young -- political commentator, talk show host and Hollywood BBC correspondent -- has written for such TV shows as "Boy Meets World," and "Cybill." He is an occasional Daily News columnist and has written such inspirational books as "Great Failures of the Extremely Successful."
It was Young's publicity stunt early last year to sell his family on eBay for $5 million that won him wide notoriety -- with appearances on "Today" and other shows.
This week, MoveOnPlease.org is posting an eBay ad to sell an overnight visit with actor Kato Kaelin -- who was staying at O.J. Simpson's estate when Simpson's ex-wife was murdered -- to pay for the GOP convention coverage.
"Just imagine," Young writes in the Lampoon ad. "Kato Kaelin. America's Favorite House Guest. Sleeping on your very own couch. You'll be the envy of your entire dojo (a martial arts studio) and at the same time you'll be helping to change America."

I looked at the website.
FUNNY!
No surprise there. Fascists and Communists have no sense of humor at all. Hell, one of the first things the Stalinists did was outlaw political humor. They referred to it as "tiny counter-revolutions." So it totally makes sense that MoveOn.org cretins wouldn't want to answer press calls for commentary.
My wife is trying to take a nap. I almost broke a rib tyring to be quiet. This guy's hilarious.
I posted this because it is a news story with background information. Politicalhumor.com is also good.
DU or MO there all the same... wild eye humorless troll
